Maharashtra government to take action against open slaughter of animals 16.8.2018 DNA: Money
Maharashtra government has decided to take strict action against open slaughtering of goats and sheep and has also issued guidelines to slaughterhouses on the same. It has made mandatory for the slaughterhouses to obtain permissions from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The urban development department has also issued notifications in this regard. It says that the waste produces generated in slaughterhouses should be disposed off properly as per the MPCB guidelines. This will be applicable for those slaughterhouses who cutting more than ten animals per day. According to the state urban development department, illegal slaughtering activities has led to water and environmental pollution. "As per the MPCB Act 1981, it is mandatory for slaughterhouses to seek permissions from MPCB. Besides they also need to have the Effluent Treatment Plant (EPT) to treat the water generated in the slaughter process. Shyam Rao Shirke, a mechanical contractor who patented production of bio-CNG from sewage sludge, has shared how his initiative became functional. "I collected water from drains and made mini 'collector' to collect water bubbles, used a drum to make a gas holder. When tested, system was functional. I connected it to a gas stove and made tea," Shirke said in an interview to ANI. Sharing that Chhattisgarh Science and Technology gave him money to take it to the next level, Shirke said he built and installed it in a nullah. "In three days enough gas was collected. It was installed in a house where food was prepared for 4-5 months," the mechanical contractor said. "Scientists told me my paper has been sent to higher authorities. It had already been 2 years hence, I had forgotten about it. Yesterday I came to know Modi ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) has mentioned my invention in his speech," he added. Water sample collected by the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) failed laboratory test in July, officials said on Monday. Around 3,686 water samples were collected in July, out of which 289 samples failed bacteriological test. Incidentally, July saw the highest number of water samples fail bacteriological test this year so far.  “We regularly collect samples of water from the pockets where cases of water-borne diseases are being reported repeatedly,” said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC. “Some of the pockets of Behrampura, Gomtipur and Damilimda have more water borne cases compared to other pockets. These areas have water contamination issue due to age-old drainage system. In some places, people use motors to get water which also results in water contamination.” According to the official, south zone is most affected in terms of reporting cases of water-borne diseases.
