For the past two months, University of Delhi’s four-year degree programmes, combining subject/discipline with VET, have been in the news. Also, for nearly four months, implementation of the 6th Pay Commission’s recommendations and the NET/SET examinations’ impact on teachers’ permanency in Maharashtra has kept the state government, as also the student community on tenterhooks. Only this week, the government and the teachers’ unions — though only because prodded by a court judgement — have displayed some urgency to complete evaluation of answer sheets, certainly a welcome though belated move. Implementation of the 6th Pay Commission’s recommendation will certainly give teachers financial succour, but how far it will enhance their accountability remains tagged to a big question mark. The NET/SATE issue is a national issue, a complex one.
