Govt to examine if farmers eligible for flood relief 16.11.2017 DNA: India
The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to probe if 35 tribal farmers, of Banaskantha District (BK), are entitled to get compensation for the flood which took place in July. Citizens Resource and Action Initiative CRANTI's had moved a public interest litigation (PIL) on behalf of the tribal farmer families of Keralu and Sekra villages of the district. The petitioner's advocates, Dimple Thaker and Dixa Pandya, told the court that standing crops of these farmers were damaged by the heavy floods this July. Though the people are entitled to the compensation, neither any survey, nor any payment was made. Even the representation made to the district collector and other authorities, no response was sent by the authorities. These farmers have suffered Rs 91 lakh damage and the state government should pay them compensation, according to the plea . The amount of the damage was assessed by the farmers and the government can have its own assessment. But, based on it the farmers should be ...

The language hunter 11.11.2017 Deccan Herald - Supplements
When Ganesh Devy, a former professor of English, embarked on a search for Indias languages, he expected to walk into a graveyard, littered with dead and dying mother tongues. Instead, he says, he walked into a "dense forest of voices," a noisy Tower of Babel in one of the worlds most populous nations. He discovered that some 16 languages spoken in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh have 200 words for snow alone, some of them ornately descriptive like "flakes falling on water," or "falling when the moon is up." He found that the nomadic communities in the desert state of Rajasthan used a large number of words to describe the barren landscape, including ones for how man and animal separately experience the sandy nothingness. And that nomads, who were once branded "criminal tribes" by British rulers and now hawk maps for a living at Delhis traffic crossings, spoke a "secret" language because of the stigma attached to their community. In a dozen villages on the western coast of Maharashtra, not far from ...

Gujarat Elections 2017: Amit Shah meets party workers, Cong likely to take call on Patel reservation on Monday 5.11.2017 DNA: Recent Columns
With the high-stake Assembly polls approaching in Gujarat, BJP chief Amit Shah on Sunday held separate meetings with key party leaders and workers from the southern, central and northern regions of the state. Cong Kham Sutra does not put BJP in jitters in Gujarat 3.11.2017 Deccan Herald - News
The Congress plans in Gujarat for a "rainbow coalition" of Dalits, Patidars, OBCs and Muslims, as a re-creation of Kshatriya-Harijan-Adivasi-Muslim support base of the early 1990s, has not exactly put the BJP in a state of jitters ahead of the December polls. Although these groups comprise over 60% of the electorate, senior BJP strategists see the caste chemistry is not working wonders for the Congress because the groups, notably involving the Patidars and the Other Backward Castes (OBC) are in social conflict. Hardik Patel, who became the young face of the Patel agitation two years ago, is in negotiations with the Congress on his demand for OBC quota for his community. But the Congress is unable to promise OBC tag as yet. Alpesh Thakore, a young OBC leader who recently joined the Congress, is opposed to extending reservation for the upper caste Patels. OBCs make up 40% but Patidars are believed to be close to 20%. Thakores opposition and fissures among the Patidars over Hardiks support for Rahul ...
