Want our approval for Bullet Train? Give us ponds, ambulances, solar lights, doctors: Palghar residents talk tough 18.6.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Ponds, ambulances, solar street lights and doctors are some of the demands villagers in Maharashtra's Palghar district want met before they give their nod to the government's ambitious bullet train project, say officials. Hoping to overcome the villagers' resistance, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHRCL), the nodal body to implement the project, has tweaked its strategy to ensure that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is on track for a 2022 launch and is agreeing to many of the conditions. Failing to make much headway through mass contact programmes in the 23 villages where it faced extreme resistance, the NHRCL, in a major change in stand, is approaching individual landowners for their demands in addition to the compensation they are due. "We have changed our stance. Earlier, we would gather villagers at village chowks to convince them of the good that the project would do. That did not work, so we have decided that we will now target landowners only and ask village heads to give in ...

Even as Gujarat awaits full-fledged monsoon in the hope that the state’s Jalsanchay Abhiyan will bear fruits, over 215 tribals in and around Dahod have been left high and dry for almost nine years now. No, they are not waiting for water, but payment for the community wells they dug under MGNREGA in 2009. A labour 2015 court verdict had directed the government to pay them their wages. The matter pertains to a community well that was dug under MGNREGA in the farm of one Nathubhai of Dhodhsa village in Fatehpura taluka of Dahod district in February 2009. It took 22 workers six days to build the community well. The wait for wages has taken them over nine years now. In fact, the harried lot also knocked the doors of the labour court in Dahod, which, in one judgment, ordered the Taluka Development Officer to pay 21  tribals of Dhodhsa village not only what was due to them but also asked the government pay a penalty for delayed wages to the labourers. Unfortunately, the court’s order had no impact as the ...

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today targeted the BJP-RSS for their "anti-Dalit" mindset and alleged that as per the "fascist ideology" of these outfits, the Dalits should continue to remain on the bottom rung of society. With less than a week to go for the Karnataka Assembly polls, the Congress chief also put out a video, highlighting the anti-Dalit statements of BJP and RSS leaders. He also questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as regards the rising incidents of Dalit atrocities in the country. "Central to the RSS/BJP fascist ideology, is that Dalits and Adivasis must continue to exist at the bottom rung of society. In this disturbing video, the dangers of this mindset and how it's openly propagated by senior RSS/BJP leaders is revealed, Gandhi wrote on Twitter, using the hashtag -- "AnswerMaadiModi". The over-two-minute-long video cites incidents of alleged atrocities, including the flogging of a few Dalit men in Gujarat's Una in 2016 and the recent SC/ST markings
