Residents of various localities on the periphery of Vibhutipura lake took part in 'Run4Lake-5k' initiative on Sunday, to raise awareness about the dying water body, near HAL airport. Organised by VIKAS (Vibhutipura Kere Abhivruddhi Mattu Samrakshane Samiti) - a residents' body - the programme saw the participation of around 500 people, including schoolchildren, from LBS Nagar, Vignan Nagar, Vibhutipura, Annasandra Palya, Basavanagar and nearby areas. The second edition of 'Run4Lake-5k' supported by India@75 movement - apart from creating awareness on lakes - aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to expedite restoration work of the dilapidated water body. VIKAS members said the lake lacked outer and inner fencing and faced issues like garbage dumping and sewage contamination. Almost 1,000 officials and elected representatives from 200 cities across India are set to be trained by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, and the Administrative Staff College of India, in better implementation of the National UrbanHealth Mission (NUHM). "A vulnerability mapping is being done to understand what individual urban areas need and where the funds are to be channelised," K Rajeswara Rao, joint secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said here on Friday. The official said he had written to all the mayors in Karnataka to ensure the efficient use of the allocated funds, and called for improved focus and framing of guidelines. Dakshina KannadaZilla Panchayat on Wednesday launched mapping of public assets in Mangaluru taluk on a pilot basis - another first to its credit. A joint initiative of the ZP, with the IndianSpace Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Alva's Institute of Engineering and Technology here, it is expected to be completed within a month's time.
