Tibet inseparable part of China's 'sacred' territory, says Premier Li Keqiang during rare visit 29.7.2018 DNA: Top News
Tibet is an inseparable part of China's "sacred" territory, and religious figures should promote national unity and ethnic harmony, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said during a rare visit to a region that is a focus for international rights concerns. Chinese troops marched into Tibet in 1950 in what China officially terms a peaceful liberation, and has ruled it with an iron fist even since. It is one of Beijing's most sensitive territorial issues, and has been hit by repeated anti-Chinese protests, although the region has fairly been quiet since the last large-scale demonstrations in 2008. China routinely denies charges from rights groups and exiles of repression and says its rule ended serfdom and brought prosperity to what was a backward region, and that it fully respects the rights of the Tibetan people. Li, who visited Tibet from July 25 to July 27, went to two major sites connected to Tibetan Buddhism, state news agency Xinhua said late on Saturday. At the Jokhang Temple, which was damaged by a fire in ...

China: Tibetan students banned from religious activities 24.7.2018 DNA: Top News
Children in traditionally Buddhist Tibet have been banned from taking part in religious activities over the summer holidays, an official Chinese Communist Party newspaper has reported. The Global Times quoted an education official in the regional capital of Lhasa as saying that students were required to sign an agreement to "not take part in any form of religious activity" during the break. The policy appears to reflect increasingly harsh restrictions on the Himalayan region's traditional Buddhist culture, largely aimed at reducing the influence of the region's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India. "The students are following the regulation under the guidance of their parents and teachers," the paper said, quoting Choephel, the head of the political education department at Lhasa Middle School, who like many Tibetans uses just one name. No phone number was available for the department and Chinese authorities severely limit foreign journalists' access to Tibet. The report was ...

Delhi University dream for young Tibetan refugees 26.6.2018 DNA: Recent Columns
Sitting in an auditorium at the Delhi University's (DU) North Campus, Tenzin Nyiton was anxiously waiting for the officials to answer her admission-related queries on Monday. The 18-year-old, who studied Humanities at a school meant for Tibetan refugee children in Gopalpur (Himachal Pradesh), is now aspiring to explore the world beyond her "community environment" at the university. Nyiton along with a group of 25 other Tibetan students visited the Delhi University to get their admission-related queries solved. After waiting for 15-20 minutes they finally met the officials. "I was not aware of the last day of registration and hence I had failed to submit my form during the first phase of registration. Fortunately, DU re-opened the registrations for foreign candidates and I managed to apply. I want to pursue Psychology (H) at either Miranda House or Hindu College now," she said. Her family has been living away from their ancestral place in Tibet since the 1980s. Sitting next to her was 19-year-old Ugyen ...
