Some passengers on a Bagdogra-bound AirAsia India flight have complained of ill treatment by the airline staff after the flight was delayed by more than four hours on Wednesday, prompting the civil aviation ministry to assure of "appropriate follow-up action". The incident took place on the flight from Kolkata after the passengers were allegedly asked to deplane after a delay of four-and-a-half hours as the plane had some technical snag. "DGCA is reviewing the incident and we will take appropriate follow up action," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said on Twitter. His tweet came in response to a tweet seeking against the airline for the incident. Indian Oil Corporation Executive Director (West Bengal) Dipankar Ray, who was onboard the same flight, said the staff behaved in a very "unprofessional and rude" manner with the passengers and asked them to deboard, leading to an altercation between both sides. "The flight was scheduled to depart at 9 am and was initially delayed by 30 minutes. ...

Now, common man may fly overseas with Udan scheme 20.6.2018 DNA: Opinion
Imagine state governments deftly stepping into the capital-intensive aviation sector and flying their own flights to international destinations in Asean/Saarc regions. It may not be too far-fetched when the civil aviation ministry flags off a new scheme soon, called 'International Udan', to give wings to their dreams. It could be to tap their tourism potential or to lend a hand to the hapless fliers troubled by ridiculously high airfare. The rich group of non-resident Keralites (NRKs), which in 2012 proposed to set up a private airline Air Kerala in order to address the travel woes of Keralites flying to the Gulf region, will surely be happy. The unique project -- the first in the country – which proposed to sell stake to NRKs and private companies, however, didn't take off, thanks to the 5-20 rule (20 aircraft and five years of domestic operations for seeking permission to fly abroad). Assam government, for another, has expressed its interest in connecting Guwahati airport with several Southeast Asian ...

Saudi Arabia football team's plane catches fire, lands safely in Rostov 19.6.2018 DNA: India
Saudi Arabia's national soccer team landed safely in Rostov-on-Don, Russia on Monday evening, after an apparent engine fire on the plane carrying the players to a World Cup match. Russia's aviation watchdog Rosaviatsya said that during the landing there was a brief fire on one of the engines and that it would investigate the incident, Interfax reported. Social and Saudi media footage also appeared to show one of the engines catching fire, but a spokesman for airline Rossiya denied a fire had occurred and said the fault was due to a bird strike. The team were travelling on a Rossiya Airbus A319 from St Petersburg to Rostov-on-Don, where they are due to play their second Group A match against Uruguay on Wednesday. As it came in to land, the plane "suffered a technical fault with one of its engines, with a bird getting caught seen as the preliminary cause," a Rossiya airlines spokesman said in a statement. Reports of a fire in one of the engines were incorrect, the spokesman added. "Nothing threatened the ...

How Rs 1,000-cr Singapore, AU Bank affair unfolded in Jaipur 19.6.2018 DNA: Mumbai
It took 45 days for Temasek, a Singapore government holding, to woo and pick up a less-than 5% equity stake in the AU Small Finance Bank and give it a capital boost of Rs 1,000 crore. This is a giant leap for a small finance bank launched in 2017 following the Reserve Bank of India’s approval and one that reaffirms its overall valuation past Rs 20,000-crore mark.  Ten applicants got the go-ahead from the RBI for starting banking operations last year. AU has outstripped some of the promising ventures in its first year of active banking pursuit. This includes The Equitas Holdings public limited, Chennai, trading just above Rs 150 on the National Stock Exchange and the Ujjivan Financial Services Private Limited, Bengaluru, (Rs 390). In comparison, the AU Bank shares closed at a high of more than 712 rupees a share on the NSE.  The banking major headquartered in Jaipur confirmed the capital infusion by the Singapore-based investment firm that has holdings in an incredibly vast range of sectors including in ...

Comma, coma, comatose 18.6.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Of late, it has been reported in the media that just because of a 'comma' the AirAsia deal could be approved by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) as the meaning became different had the particular comma not been placed in the sentence. This is difficult to believe. Though the then finance secretary, who headed FIPB at that time, had called it bad drafting, he had defended the approval given to AirAsia and passed the buck to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for not applying its mind while giving going through the proposal. This is a typical instance of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing and vice versa. This is not acceptable. The government is expected to work in tandem, without contradictory orders, policy documents and statements being issued by different ministries and directorates. Different ministries in the government approved the use of comma and provided an interpretation which suited the foreign airlines in partnership with Tatas in India, however, there are ...

Indian-origin hotelier in car park battle with Heathrow Airport in UK 17.6.2018 DNA: Popular News
Britain's leading Indian-origin hotelier, Surinder Arora, is locked in a legal battle with Heathrow Airport for his right to build a multi-storey car park at one of the world's biggest airport hubs. According to 'The Sunday Times', Arora has issued a UK High Court claim against the west London airport over his plans to build a 2,077-space nine-storey car park on a land he owns at Heathrow. While Heathrow Airport Limited claims it alone is entitled to build these spaces, Arora has challenged that claim. Under local planning rules, a maximum of 42,000 car parking spaces are allowed at the airport. Arora believes the 42,000 cap refers to the airport site as a whole, of which his land is a part and therefore should allow him the right to build car-park spaces too. A planning application has been pending with Hillingdon Council since 2015. Unable to secure approval for his multi-storey car park, Arora was allowed to build a smaller version with 1,000 spaces and five storeys on the site, which opened last ...
