Why Indian banks are worried about Vijay Mallya’s missing Tipu Sultan sword 19.4.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Back in his swashbuckling days, Vijay Mallya had bought – with much fanfare – Tipu Sultan’s sword. Now it appears that the prized possession has vanished, and no one knows its whereabouts. The matter came to the fore when a consortium of 13 Indian banks tried hard to convince the London High Court against discharging a freeze order on the global assets of Vijay Mallya. Mallya owes Rs 9000 crore to Indian banks and had bought the Tiger of Mysore’s sword in London in 2004. However, he said he gave it away in 2016 because it was bringing bad luck. The sword is worth around Rs 1.8 crore and no one knows where it lies. The lawyers representing the consortium of Indian banks said that they were at risk of Mallya ‘dissipating his assets’. According to one report, Mallya had tried to give away the give away the sword to a museum for safe-keeping but they had refused citing the maintenance issues. Even Tipu Sultan’s successor, has no clue what happened to the sword. The family had tried to purchase it from Mallya ...

Builder promises homebuyer 39th floor in 38-storeyed-building, MahaRera asks him to reimburse buyer 18.4.2018 DNA: India
A home buyer recently approached MahaRERA seeking refund of his amount with interest because the developer failed to hand over the possession of the flat. Allauddin Juned Shaikh filed a complaint against Skyline Construction Company, in their registered project RNA Exotica, Goregaon. The complaint stated that the agreement was for a flat on 39th floor, but the developer had not been given approval to construct the 39th floor in the building. During the hearing, the adjudicating officer said that the developer still collected money from the buyer despite not having required permissions to construct the 39th floor. However, the defence for the builder argued that the developer applied for height clearance on November 4, 2011 and the authorities had given approval to extend the height to 119.96 metres above mean sea level. Following this, the developer filed an appeal before the appellate committee of ministry of civil aviation. On August 27, 2015 the authority revised the height and granted NOC, which ...

Govt to soon ban the flying of lantern kites within 10-kilometres of an airport 18.4.2018 DNA: India
Flying lantern kites within ten kilometres of an airport might soon be banned, with the government proposing amendments to aircraft rules. Besides, flying of wish kites in the vicinity of airports could also be banned, according to a draft notification. The proposal from the Civil Aviation Ministry comes against the backdrop of certain instances where flying of such objects apparently caused disturbances to pilots operating flights, especially during landings and take-offs. To restrict flying of kites near airports, the ministry is looking to make amendments to the Aircraft Rules, 1937. "... No person shall launch a lantern kite or a wish kite from a place located within ten kilometres from the aerodrome reference point of any aerodrome in India," the draft notification said. In this regard, changes are being proposed in Rule 66 that pertains to false lights. A senior Air Traffic Control (ATC) official said flying of kites can pose security threat to airport operations. There have been incidents of ...

Suresh Prabhu assures exporters of taking up GST refund issue with Finance Ministry 18.4.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday assured exporters of taking up the issue of GST refund with the finance ministry. Exporters are claiming that over 60 per cent of their refunds are still stuck with the government. "I have asked them (exporters) to give me the details of the pending refund. GST refund is a major issue for exports. I will take it up with the finance ministry," he said. Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) is of the view that the refund filing mechanism should be made completely online and the pending GST refund released immediately to help exporters tide over the cash crunch. The issue has been hanging fire for over five months now with exporters complaining that delay in GST refund has blocked their working capital. Prabhu also said the government is taking all steps to further boost the country's exports. Speaking to FIEO members here, he asked them to prepare a detailed action plan of all sectors and sub-sectors suggesting ways to promote their ...

Airlines inspecting Boeing 737 engines after fatal Southwest incident 18.4.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Some major customers of Boeing Co's popular 737 jets including Korean Air Lines Co Ltd said on Wednesday they were inspecting engines of the type that blew apart mid-air on a fatal Southwest Airlines Co flight on Tuesday. European regulators this month began requiring an inspection by early next year, and a person familiar with the matter said U.S. regulators were near a similar rule, which affects a number of 737s in operation globally. Southwest Flight 1380 made an emergency landing in Philadelphia on Tuesday after an engine ripped apart mid-air, shattering a window on the 737 and nearly sucking a passenger through. One of 144 passengers died. The actions by regulators show that there has been some concern, albeit non-urgent, about the engine, a workhorse of the global civil aviation fleet that has logged more than 350 million hours of safe travel but was also being examined after a 2016 accident. The CFM56-7B engine type involved in the Southwest incident was produced by a joint venture of U.S. firm ...

Seven per cent growth not enough to match China: Jayant Sinha 17.4.2018 DNA: Top News
Seven per cent of sustained GDP growth of India for next 20 years will not be enough for India to match China's current level of economic growth, Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation said in Ahmedabad on Monday. Matching China's growth levels will be a big challenge, he said. Sinha was in the city to deliver AMA - PVRN Iyer First Memorial Lecture on Á New Economy for a New India' at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) on the topic 'A New Economy for a New India'. Giving statistics, he said that India's growth rate in dollar terms post liberalization in 1991 till 2017 was 8.9%. "If the country continues to grow at 7% for next 20 years, the per capita income will be at $5,400, which is much below China's current per capita income of $8,200," said Sinha, adding that even matching our northern neighbour's growth statistics will be a major challenge for India and to ...

We may pick up Tesla Roadster and bring it back to Earth: Boeing CEO takes jibe at Elon Musk 15.4.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
Banter between heavyweights in the aerospace sector always calls for a ringside seat and Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg’s jibe at Tesla and Space X CEO Elon Musk has turned out to be what could be an entertaining slugfest. Talking recently at a Politico Space Forum, Muilenburg commented that though the aerospace titan of a company does not have any plans to launch cars of its own into space, it “might pick up the one out there and bring it back.” The car he referred to was the red Tesla Roadster that was launched into space by SpaceX on its Falcon Heavy rocket - the most powerful operational rocket in the world. Boeing is competing with Tesla in the same space. The aviation giant is working on an experimental reusable rocket called the Phantom Express in collaboration with the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The Phantom Express will be able to launch small satellites into orbit. And more recently, Boeing has announced an investment in UK’s Reaction Engine company that is developing an ...
