E-whiskers may help lend sense of touch to future robots 26.6.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Scientists have created e-whiskers or hair-like structures that can pave the way for engineering electronic human-like skin for robots and prosthetics. Little whiskers or long, sticky hairs are actually touch receptors you see on your pet send vital information about the surroundings to the brain and help the animals make sense of their environment. Researchers from University of Texas at Dallas in the US used shape-memory polymers to create artificial, electronic versions called e-whiskers, which mimic the properties of the real thing. The hair-like structures are a significant advancement toward engineering electronic human skin, according to the researchers. "There are some really interesting examples in the animal kingdom of how whiskers are useful for probing and interrogating the environment," said Jonathan Reeder, lead author of the study published journal Advanced Materials. Seals use long whiskers for very complex sensing. Tests have been conducted in which a blindfolded seal will find a fish ...

Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Modi reacts to reports of JD(U) skipping International Yoga Day 21.6.2018 DNA: Mumbai
Amidst lukewarm relations between allies JD(U) and BJP, has Nitish Kumar's party skipped International Yoga Day celebrations? This question gained currency with no show from top JD(U) leaders in the International Yoga Day event in Patalipura Complex in Patna.  Reacting to the development, senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Modi told ANI, " It is not a question about JDU. I know more than dozen people present here who are from JDU. Don't people from RJD & JDU practice Yoga? It is not necessary that everyone comes out to participate:".  Sushil Modi's face-saving measure came after senior JD(U) leaders didn't exactly warm up to the idea of public display of Yoga skills on International Yoga Day, one of the pet projects of PM Modi. TOI quoted JD(U) state chief Bashishth Yadav as saying, " People have been doing yoga in their homes as well. Yoga has been a part of India's culture and PM Modi's appeal is also appreciable. However, yoga can be done anywhere". He essentially said that it can be ...

Ahead of Beijing tour, Nepal PM Oli bats for greater trade ties with China under BRI 19.6.2018 DNA: Top News
Land-locked Nepal is keen to enhance cross-border rail-road connectivity, infrastructure development, trade and tourism cooperation with China under its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said. Ahead of his first official visit to Beijing since his re-election, Prime Minister Oli said that his government is fully committed to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation under the framework of the BRI signed with China two years ago. Chinese President Xi Jinping had unveiled the BRI in 2013 with an aim to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes. India has not endorsed the BRI, a pet project of Xi, as the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of the BRI, passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India says it cannot accept a project that ignores its core concern on sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nepal attaches great value to its relationship with China ...
