Political bosses have to face consequences, not me, says CEA Arvind Subramanian 18.7.2018 DNA: Money
Outgoing chief economic advisor (CEA) Arvind Subramanian sees stigmatised capitalism as a big challenge for the Indian economy apart from agriculture and employment. Stigmatised capitalism has made it difficult for private sector to have a greater role in the economy, Subramanian tells Anjul Tomar in a conversation as he prepares to leave on July 26 for his next assignment. Subramanian will be going back to teaching and research at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Subramanian, 59, had joined the government in October 2014. His contractual term was coterminous with the government in May 2019. After former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan and former Niti Aayog's chief Arvind Panagariya's return to the academia, your decision to quit is being seen as the government's failure to retain independent-minded economists. Boatmen strike in Bihar leaves many stranded 17.7.2018 DNA: Opinion
The strike by boatmen in Bihar left a newlywed couple stranded on the shores of River Ganga on Tuesday, as the marriage party waited for several hours at a Patna city ghat to return to their homes. The newlywed couple and their family members waited for several hours at the Jethuli ghat in Patna city, but to no avail. "The wedding was solemnised on Monday, following which we had to return home with the bride. But the strike has left us stranded. We are looking for other options, but there doesn't seem to be any feasible alternatives," said Surendra Prasad, brother of the groom Rahul Kumar. The strike was called to protest the arrest of seven boatmen, who were put behind bars for sailing overloaded boats in River Ganga between Patna city and Raghopur last week. The local district administration had also made it clear that no boats would be allowed to sail without getting the required licence, which irked the oarsmen more. Apart from the marriage party, a Raghopur resident, Khushbu, who had come to Fatuha ...
