Card sales of season train passes fail to gather steam 29.3.2017 DNA: India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for a ‘cashless digital India’ isn’t invoking much of a response in Mumbai’s suburban railway network, if season pass sales using debit and credit cards is anything to go by. Sales using cards account for between 1-2.5 per cent of the total sales, and several ticketing clerks DNA spoke to said that the situation might not improve in the weeks to come if the railways does not bring in changes. Statistics available with the railways show that on Western Railway (WR), between January 1, when the service was rolled out, and March 27, only 30,768 season passes were sold on its suburban network. Of these, 20,178 passes were bought using debit cards and 10,590 passes using credit cards. This is against the fact that every day, WR’s suburban network sees season pass sales of 30,000 units. On Central Railway (CR), between January 1 and March 17,  out of total season pass sales of 37,55,171 units, the share of season passes bought using debit or credit cards stood at ...

Youth's post of abuse by Rly TTE goes viral 29.3.2017 DNA: Recent Columns
The ugly side of the Central Railways authorities came to light on Monday when a video and a post of a youth being manhandled by a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Mulund railway station went viral on Facebook. Sharan Malhotra, a student of Ruia College, Matunga was on his way to hand over an assignment to a friend on platform number 2 of Mulund station. On his way back, he was caught by the TTE for not buying a platform ticket. In his post on Facebook, he said, "The TC had a valid point. I should have bought a platform ticket of Rs 10 even if I wanted to just enter the railway station and stand on the platform. I agreed to pay the fine. He took me to his main office, which had two TCs and one head TC, and four other violators." Malhotra agreed to pay the fine but realised he did not have enough money, so he requested one of the TTEs to accompany him to the ATM. However, he was asked to leave his wallet and mobile phone as security. Instead, he agreed to leave his bag. Outraged, the TTE allegedly started ...

Railways body writes to Western Railways over Bandra land encroachment 26.3.2017 DNA: India
In a stark reminder of how much encroachment of government land has increased in Mumbai, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has written to the Western Railways (WR) to clear encroachers off a portion of a 43,000 sq m plot in Bandra east. This land has been put up for an 80-year lease by the RLDA the proceeds of which will be used to finance rail projects. Speaking to DNA, Ravinder Bhakar confirmed the request of RLDA to clear some encroachers from the plot. "It was cleared to their satisfaction," Bhakar said. It's not the first time that the land is at the centre of an encroachment bid. DNA, in its February 11, 2015 edition, had published an article on how the plot of land had been neatly divided into farming plots by unknown people. The irony is that this land was retrieved by WR after a protracted fight lasting almost a decade, which involved private individuals — whom the railways labelled as encroachers and the state government. The fight for the plot started way back in September 2008, when ...

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu his ministry has drawn up a mission to save Rs 41,000 crore on electricity energy bills over the next ten years by betting big on solar energy, even as it expects to mop-up Rs 17,000 crore through non-fare revenue modes. Addressing a gathering after commissioning various rail infra developmental works on South Central Railway (SCR) from Hi-Tech city railway station here, he said his Ministry has drawn up Mission 41K to save Rs 41,000 crore on the expenditure on energy consumption over the next 10 years. Prabhu said after taking over as Railway minister he had stressed that expenses on energy should come down by 15% and they are working on the same. "So far we have been successful in saving over Rs 4,000 crore expenditure on power bills in Railways. One of the strategies is to go for solar power and generate 1000 MW of solar power in the next five years. In addition, we have already started production of 26 MW in wind energy. With Tejas date looming, rake still not ready 25.3.2017 DNA: Mumbai
The good news for Mumbaikars is that the Mumbai CST-Goa Tejas might be the first of the routes nationwide for the Railways' most premium train offering yet. The better news is that at a function in Mumbai recently, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that the Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express could be flagged off by the first week of April. It goes downhill from there because the Railway Ministry, in a query from DNA, on Friday said the first Tejas rake is not ready yet. A Railway Ministry spokesperson said the rake is still under construction at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala. The production schedule for RCF, which was finalised in mid-2016, included the construction of 60 Tejas coaches. Up till now, however, about 20 coaches are under construction. The Railways had missed a number of deadlines. At a recent event in New Delhi, Prabhu set a June deadline for the first Tejas Express. The earlier deadline of June 30, 2016 has passed, and the new March 31, 2017 deadline might not be met, said officials. The ...
