Indian's women cricketers have attained overnight stardom and are now hoping the handsome financial rewards for their stellar World Cup show will be followed by lucrative sponsorship deals, which their male counterparts attract. Ten of the 15 squad members have job security as they are employed with the Indian Railways but they feel it is time top corporates also open up to women's cricket. It has been almost a week since the World Cup final at Lord's but most of the squad members are yet to be approached for sponsorship. Captain Mithali Raj is among the few who have tied up a sports management company to take care of her commercial interests. The cricketers may have become household names but they have not yet attracted much interest as far as sponsorship is concerned. India's star all-rounder Deepti Sharma, all of 19, did not have much clue when inquired about a major corporate showing interest in her. For now, she is just happy that she has got a kit sponsor. Post 50-over success, Mithali Raj says India must play more Tests 27.7.2017 DNA: Top News
Twenty20s and one-dayers are the formats driving women's cricket forward but it is only the ultimate challenge of playing Tests that will help India produce more world-class players, said skipper Mithali Raj who has played just 10 Tests in an 18-year-old career. Speaking at felicitation function organised by the BCCI, where each of the squad member was presented Rs 50 lakh by the Board, Mithali spoke of the importance of playing more Tests. The Ashes between Australia and England is the only regular Test fixture in women's cricket while other teams mainly play the shorter formats. India have played just five Tests in the last 10 years. "Test matches are the ultimate test for cricketers, whether it is your temperament, skill or endurance. However, women's cricket needs promotion and so far it has been done mainly through T20s and ODIs by the respective cricket boards," said Mithali at a special felicitation ceremony organised by the BCCI. "As of now, it seems every board wishes to market the sport through ...
