On December 31 2020, the newsrack service will be shut down permanently.

It has been a nice long run from the Sarai days in 2004 to being hosted on its own domain around 2006. Beside maintenance, there has been no real active development on the code or the features since early 2008. Since 2015, even all that maintenance was pretty bare bones. A lot of news sources no longer provide reliable RSS feeds and since mid 2018, there were growing issues with the service and I only kept it alive to assist a handful of users.

So, it is time to shut this down. The internet world in 2020 is vastly differently from 2003 when I first conceptualized this service. Thanks for using this all these years.

Most domestic terrorists come from the white supremacist, anti-abortion, anti-government, and militia movements. Now the FBI is recognizing "conspiracy theorists" as new domestic terrorist threat. We've seen the insane nut-baggery cause real harm since Trump began his run for office. Yahoo! News broke the story: The FBI for the first time has identified fringe conspiracy theories as a domestic terrorist threat, according to a previously unpublicized document obtained by Yahoo News. (Read the document below.) The FBI intelligence bulletin from the bureau’s Phoenix field office, dated May 30, 2019, describes “conspiracy theory-driven domestic extremists,” as a growing threat, and notes that it is the first such report to do so. It lists a number of arrests, including some that haven’t been publicized, related to violent incidents motivated by fringe beliefs. Exploring the Shadows of the US Security State: How I Learned Not to Love Big Brother 24.8.2017 Truthout.com
(Photo: Gorodenkoff / iStock / Getty Images Plus) This piece has been adapted and expanded from the introduction to Alfred W. McCoy's new book, In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global Power . In the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks, Washington pursued its elusive enemies across the landscapes of Asia and Africa, thanks in part to a massive expansion of its intelligence infrastructure, particularly of the emerging technologies for digital surveillance, agile drones, and biometric identification. In 2010, almost a decade into this secret war with its voracious appetite for information, the Washington Post reported that the national security state had swelled into a "fourth branch" of the federal government -- with 854,000 vetted officials, 263 security organizations, and over 3,000 intelligence units, issuing 50,000 special reports every year. Though stunning, these statistics only skimmed the visible surface of what had become history's largest and most lethal ...

What happens when all we have left is the Pentagon? 5.2.2017 Le Monde Diplomatique

At over $600 billion a year and counting, the Pentagon already receives significantly more than its fair share of federal funds. What Happens When All We Have Left Is the Pentagon? Trump's Vision of a Militarized US 2.2.2017 Truthout - All Articles
(Photo: David B. Gleason ; Edited: LW / TO) At over $600 billion a year and counting, the Pentagon already receives significantly more than its fair share of federal funds. If President Donald Trump has his way, though, that will prove a sum for pikers and misers. He and his team are now promising that spending on defense and homeland security will increase dramatically in the years to come, even as domestic programs are slashed and entire civilian agencies shuttered. The new administration is reportedly considering a plan -- modeled on proposals from the military-industrial-complex-backed Heritage Foundation -- that would cut a staggering $10.5 trillion in federal spending over the next decade. The Departments of Energy, Commerce, Transportation, and State might see their budgets slashed to the bone; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be privatized; and (though the money involved would amount to chicken feed) the National Endowments for the Arts and for the Humanities would be eliminated ...

Feds Charge Kansas Militia Members With Plotting to Bomb Somali Immigrants 15.10.2016 Mother Jones
The Department of Justice announced today that it had prevented members of a Kansas militia group called the Crusaders from targeting Somali immigrants with homemade bombs. Three men were charged with domestic terrorism following an eight-month investigation in which a paid FBI informant gained access to their meetings, where they allegedly plotted attacks on Muslims. According to the criminal complaint , the men stockpiled firearms, ammunition—nearly 2,000 pounds of it—and explosive components. They reportedly believed the attack, planned for November 9, the day after the election, would "wake people up." Curtis Allen, Gavin Wright, and Patrick Stein allegedly contemplated murder, kidnapping, rape, and arson before settling on a different plan: They would obtain four vehicles, pack them with explosives, and set them off at the four corners of an apartment complex in Garden City, Kansas, that housed a mosque and 120 Somali refugees. According to the complaint, the group referred to Muslims as ...
