MSNBC's Brewer Promotes Electric Car Charging Stations as Parent Company GE Sells Them 20.11.2010 NewsBusters
Displaying a clear conflict of interest during Friday's 12PM ET hour on MSNBC, anchor Contessa Brewer did a story promoting electric car charging stations but did not disclose to viewers that the channel's parent company, General Electric, was selling the very same product. GE commercials for the charging stations have frequently aired on MSNBC in recent weeks. Brewer began the segment, a part of NBC-Universal's "Green is Progress" week, by declaring: "Houston, the city known for gas pumps and oil gushers, is getting the nation's largest network of electric car charging stations." The company providing the charging stations was not General Electric, but rather NRG Energy. Brewer interviewed the company's president and CEO, David Crane. View video below read ...

Amid IPO hoopla, the stock markets are shrinking 19.11.2010 Salt Lake Tribune
By GRAHAM BOWLEY The New York Times Updated Nov 18, 2010 10:34PM MDT One of the golden oldies of the stock market tables — GM — is back. But where did all those other stock symbols go? For all the hoopla over General Motors, which returned to the New York Stock Exchange last week in one of the largest initial public offerings of all time, the nation’s stock markets seem to be getting smaller, not bigger. Hundreds of stocks that once captivated investors — Pets.com, anyone? — vanished long ago. Scores of big-name public companies have passed into private hands. Ot... ...

Top Trends of 2010: HTML5 19.11.2010 ReadWriteWeb
2010 has been a watershed year for the next version of HTML, the markup language that all web pages are written in. The reason for the emerging popularity of HTML5 strikes at the heart of a company by the name of Adobe: interactivity. Adobe's near ubiquitous Flash technology has been the default way to add interactivity to web pages since the dot com era. But in 2010, that began to change. HTML5 enables much the same type of functionality as Flash (and Microsoft's Silverlight for that matter). Using HTML5, developers can add features like video, animations and drag-and-drop. Another reason for the emergence of HTML5 is the Mobile Web. Using HTML5, mobile developers can create browser-based mobile sites that have a similar sophistication to native mobile apps. Let's look back at the past year of HTML5 innovation... Sponsor Google: The Biggest Advocate of HTML5 Probably the biggest champion for HTML5 is Google, which has a huge financial incentive to ensure that HTML web pages continue to ...
Growth and the Bush Tax Cuts 19.11.2010 The Atlantic - Matthew Ygblesias
David Leonhardt notes that evidence of the Bush tax cuts’ beneficial impact on growth is difficult to find: Is there good evidence the tax cuts persuaded more people to join the work force (because they would be able to keep more of their income)? Not really. The labor-force participation rate fell in the years after [...]

The Domenici-Rivlin Plan 18.11.2010 The Atlantic - Matthew Ygblesias
I agree with Jon Chait, the Domenici-Rivlin debt reduction proposal is a lot better than the Simpson-Bowles one. That reflects, I think, the chairs’ greater level of actual involvement with budgetary issues. The highlights: — Higher Social Security benefits for the poor, lower benefits for the rich. — Slightly lower cost-of-living adjustments for everyone. — [...]
