Israel to approve four unauthorised West Bank settler outposts
|
16.5.2013 |
The Guardian -- Front Page |
| Legalisation, which comes amid rise in attacks on Palestinians and their property, could frustrate US peace efforts
The Israeli government is to retroactively legalise four unauthorised settler outposts in the West Bank in a move likely to exasperate the US secretary of state, John Kerry, before his fourth visit to Jerusalem next week in a drive to restart peace talks.
The measure comes amid a heightened spate of attacks on Palestinians and their property after the killing of a settler in the West Bank last month . The so-called price tag attacks prompted an emergency meeting of government ministers and security officials on Thursday to discuss tougher measures in dealing with settler extremism, according to Israeli media reports.
The government said it had taken steps to confer legal status on the four outposts, which have been slated for demolition since 2003, in response to a petition submitted to the supreme court by the Israeli settlement monitoring organisation Peace Now.

Even Stephen Hawking makes mistakes – he's wrong about the Israel boycott | Steve Caplan
|
13.5.2013 |
Guardian: Science |
| I respect Hawking for his brilliance and personal courage in overcoming tremendous obstacles, but his decision to support the boycott of Israel is contrary to the nature of academia
I followed the news of Professor Stephen Hawking's decision to decline an invitation as an honored speaker at the conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres with great disappointment.
Let me first note that Prof Hawking is a personal hero of mine, someone who has overcome unbelievable obstacles. His perseverance and courage in rising to scientific feats is awe-inspiring. Indeed, my 11-year-old son recently chose Prof Hawking as a topic for a speech about "someone who has overcome obstacles" – and having won the school contest, found that a child from another school had chosen the same topic at the district championship. Prof Hawking ranked highly on the list with Helen Keller and others who have overcome great odds in the course of their lives.
My respect for Hawking as a scientist and person of ... |

Stephen Hawking's support for the boycott of Israel is a turning point | Ali Abunimah
|
9.5.2013 |
The Guardian -- World Latest |
| Boycotting Israel as a stance for justice is going mainstream – Israelis can no longer pretend theirs is in an enlightened country
A standard objection to the Palestinian campaign for the boycott of Israel is that it would cut off "dialogue" and hurt the chances of peace. We've heard this again in the wake of Professor Stephen Hawking's laudable decision to withdraw from Israel's Presidential Conference in response to requests from Palestinian academics – but it would be hard to think of a more unconvincing position as far as Palestinians are concerned.
One of the most deceptive aspects of the so-called peace process is the pretence that Palestinians and Israelis are two equal sides, equally at fault, equally responsible – thus erasing from view the brutal reality that Palestinians are an occupied, colonised people, dispossessed at the hands of one of the most powerful militaries on earth.
For more than two decades, under the cover of this fiction, Palestinians have engaged in ... |

China welcomes Binyamin Netanyahu
|
8.5.2013 |
The Guardian -- World Latest |
| Visits from Israeli prime minister and president prompt speculation about China's possible role as a Middle East mediator
Chinese leaders welcomed Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu to Beijing on Wednesday, hard on the heels of the Palestinian president, in a piece of diplomatic choreography that has highlighted the country's growing interest in the Middle East.
Premier Li Keqiang told the Israeli leader he anticipated exchanging views on regional issues such as the peace process as well as bilateral co-operation, as they met in the Great Hall of the People. Li and Chinese president Xi Jinping met Mahmoud Abbas two days earlier, while Netanyahu was in Shanghai.
The unusual overlapping visits prompted speculation about China's possible role as a mediator, particularly after the Foreign Ministry expressed willingness to arrange a meeting if the two men wished. State media also heralded Chinese president Xi Jinping's announcement of a four-point peace plan .
