Palestinian hunger striker breaks his fast after eight months
|
23.4.2013 |
The Guardian -- World Latest |
| Israeli authorities, fearing unrest, agree to release Samer Issawi by end of year rather than serving the rest of 26-year sentence
A Palestinian prisoner who refused food for eight months has ended his hunger strike after a deal was reached with Israeli authorities for his early release, his lawyer and the military said.
Samer Issawi began refusing food in August in protest over his re-arrest last July. His strike became a rallying cry for Palestinians, who saw the 33-year-old from Jerusalem as a symbol of their struggle against Israel. Palestinian rallies in support of him turned violent on occasion.
Israeli officials feared that wider unrest could break out if anything happened to Issawi, whose weight plummeted. Several weeks ago he was sent to hospital because his health deteriorated.
Lawyer Jawad Bulous said Israeli military prosecutors had agreed early on Tuesday to release Issawi after he serves a further eight months, which means he should be released by the end of the year.

EU urged to secure Palestinian prisoner's release from Israeli jail
|
17.4.2013 |
The Guardian -- World Latest |
| Death of Samer Issawi could result in violence and damage efforts to revive peace process, foreign policy chief warned
The European Union must take "immediate and concrete steps" to secure the release of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail who has been refusing food for almost nine months and is in a critical condition, a senior Palestinian official has demanded.
In a letter to Catherine Ashton, the EU foreign policy chief, Saeb Erekat said the life of Samer Issawi "hangs in the balance" and warned his death could result in serious violence and damage efforts to revive the peace process.
"The fate of Mr Issawi is being followed very closely by millions of Palestinians, Arabs and supporters of justice worldwide. The situation is potentially explosive and any harm that comes to him will undoubtedly lead to a serious eruption of violence that will make any sort of political progress unlikely," wrote Erekat on the eve of Prisoners' Day, marked by Palestinians on Wednesday.

John Kerry: talks with Netanyahu and Abbas 'very constructive'
|
9.4.2013 |
The Guardian -- World Latest |
| US secretary of state ends three-day visit after separate meetings with Israeli prime minister and Palestinian president
John Kerry, the US secretary of state, left Israel on Tuesday after what he described as "very constructive" talks separately with the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas. But in an indication of the long haul ahead in his quest to get peace negotiations back on track, he said: "Doing it right is more important than doing it quickly."
Kerry and Netanyahu had agreed "to do our homework over the course of the next weeks … with a view to seeing how we can really pull all of the pieces together and make some progress", he said.
Kerry's three-day visit was part of a process of shuttle diplomacy that is expected to last at least three months. Talks between the two sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke down more than two and a half years ago. Kerry has been tasked by the US president, Barack Obama, with finding a ... |
