Animal farms that fuel illegal trade 19.6.2017 Deccan Herald - Supplements
The tiger paced back and forth in its cage, groaning mournfully. A second big cat slept soundly in the corner, while a third stared blankly at the bars. Next to this cage was another containing three more tigers, and after that three more cages: a line of small pens, each holding at least one cat. The tigers were property of the Kings Romans Group, which operates a casino here, along with hotels, a shooting range, a cockfighting and bullfighting ring, a Chinatown-themed shopping centre, and this zoo. It's called the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone. Conservationists maintain that this zoo is actually a farm raising animals for slaughter, and that it plays a significant role in perpetuating the illegal wildlife trade, swapping tigers with similar operations in Thailand and illegally butchering animals for ...

Gujarat closes gates at Narmada Dam, huge step in water management for state 17.6.2017 Deccan Herald - National
Gujarat government on Saturday closed all the 30 gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam that would help it almost triple the water storage capacity in the dam to 4.75 million acre-feet (MAF) of water, up from 1.4 MAF. The ceremony to close the dam gates was performed by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and his deputy Nitin Patel at the dam site in Kevadiya Colony after the state government received permission from the Narmada Control Authority to do so. Higher storage in the dam would also help state supply water to parched areas of Saurashtra and North Gujarat. The closure is expected to benefit 2.9 crore people in the state, provide drinking water to 9663 villages (a little over 50% of state's villages) and 131 urban centers, irrigation facilities to 10 lakh farmers over six lakh hectares of land, taking the overall irrigation reach in the ...
