Angry farmers move Gujarat HC against bullet train land acquisition 22.6.2018 DNA: Money
Farmers from Surat and other districts in the state have moved the Gujarat High Court against the state government's move to acquire their land for the bullet train project. Over 3,000 farmers from 192 villages in Gujarat will be affected by the land acquisition for the ambitious project that will connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The court has asked the government to file its reply by Monday. The petition has challenged the government's move to acquire land on the grounds that as per the Land Acquisition Act, if land is to be acquired in more than one state for the project, the land acquisition has to be done by the centre and not the state. But in this project, the notification for land acquisition has been made by the Gujarat and Maharashtra governments. Since this is in violation of the Act, the notification should be dismissed, the petition states. It also states that as per the new rules, the farmers should be given the maximum market value of the land and that before the land is acquired, the Jantri ...

Surat farmers object to land acquisition for bullet train 19.6.2018 DNA: Money
Over 200 farmers from across 15 villages around Surat staged a protest against the notification issued by the Centre for acquiring land for the bullet train project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The farmers gave their objections in writing to the Surat district collectorate. The farmers came in tractors and motorcycles to list their 14 objections to the notifications. "It was not a protest. A notification for acquisition of land in Surat had asked for objections from the public and we had gone there to submit our objections," said Jayesh Patel, president Khedut Samaj Gujarat. He said the land acquisition is not as per the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 and that no environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the said land had been done. "Usually an EIA is done before such a notification is issued but in this case, this was not done," said Patel. He added that when land is to acquire for the public purpose the government needs to consult with local organizations and agencies. "But, this was not done in this ...

Want our approval for Bullet Train? Give us ponds, ambulances, solar lights, doctors: Palghar residents talk tough 18.6.2018 DNA: Wide Angle
Ponds, ambulances, solar street lights and doctors are some of the demands villagers in Maharashtra's Palghar district want met before they give their nod to the government's ambitious bullet train project, say officials. Hoping to overcome the villagers' resistance, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHRCL), the nodal body to implement the project, has tweaked its strategy to ensure that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is on track for a 2022 launch and is agreeing to many of the conditions. Failing to make much headway through mass contact programmes in the 23 villages where it faced extreme resistance, the NHRCL, in a major change in stand, is approaching individual landowners for their demands in addition to the compensation they are due. "We have changed our stance. Earlier, we would gather villagers at village chowks to convince them of the good that the project would do. That did not work, so we have decided that we will now target landowners only and ask village heads to give in ...

The compensation package for the farmers whose land will be acquired for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet train project will be "much more" than what is mandated by the Land Acquisition Act, a senior official said here today. A joint measurement survey is being conducted at present, which is the last stage of land acquisition process, said Achal Khare, managing director of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the implementing agency. After the survey is over, farmers will learn about the compensation package, he said. "I can assure that we will be compensating much more than what they are expecting," Khare said. Desai says he has initiated de-notification of land 3.5.2018 General News
Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai today said he had started the process of denotifying the land acquired for the mega oil refinery at Nanar in Ratnagiri district, contrary to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's assertion last week that the minister had no authority to do so. The project has become a bone of contention between ruling allies BJP and Shiv Sena, with the latter opposing it tooth and nail. Speaking to reporters at his office in Mantralaya, Desai, a senior Sena leader, said he had directed the Industries Department secretary to submit a report about de-notification. Being the industries minister, he was empowered to denotify the land acquisition process, Desai said. "As per the official procedure, the industries secretary will seek report from the Ratnagiri district collector who oversees the acquisition process," he said. Citing the land acquisition act, Desai said it was the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) which had issued ..
