Govt likely to abandon Snoopgate probe 23.6.2014 deccanherald.com
The previous UPA government's controversial move to order a probe into the "Snoopgate" affair may get a quiet burial with the Home Ministry expected to move the Union Cabinet to abandon the plan. A note will be presented before the Union Cabinet to scrap the December 26, 2013, order to set up a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the charges of surveillance of a young woman in 2009 in Gujarat, official sources said. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has already indicated that the "politically-motivated" decision to set up the inquiry commission will be reviewed by the NDA government. The BJP had strongly opposed the controversial move by the then Manmohan Singh government and demanded that the probe be stopped as a parallel inquiry had been ordered into the matter by the Gujarat government. The UPA government's decision to set up the inquiry triggered a political row as the 'Snoopgate' affair was alleged to have involved Narendra Modi when he was the Gujarat Chief Minister. It was announced ...

Preity Zinta returns from US to record statement 23.6.2014 deccanherald.com
After a brief trip to the United States, actor Preity Zinta on Sunday returned to Mumbai and will soon submit her statement to police in a case against her ex-boyfriend and industrialist Ness Wadia. The 39-year-old actor had on June 12 filed an FIR alleging that Wadia had outraged her modesty "in front of everyone" during an IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium on May 30. Wadia, however, has dismissed the allegations as "false and baseless". "As she has arrived in Mumbai, her statement will be recorded soon," said DCP Ravindra Shisve, who is supervising the probe. With the Mumbai Police having got no leads from CCTV footage it obtained, investigators want to ascertain exactly where and in front of whom the alleged incident took place. "We want to know where she was sitting and who 'everyone' is," Shisve said. The actress had claimed that Wadia had followed her to her seat and "started screaming and abusing" her in "front of everyone". "We will decide the further course of action once Zinta's statement is ...

BJP is set to abandon Snoopgate panel move 23.6.2014 Asian Age: India
Months after the previous UPA government triggered the Snoopgate controversy ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP government is set to give it a quiet burial by abandoning the move to set up a parallel commission to inquire into the charges of alleged surveillance of a woman in Gujarat. The Union home ministry is expected to move the Union Cabinet to withdraw a previous decision to set up an inquiry commission to probe the charges of surveillance of a young woman in 2009 in Gujarat. Sources said a note will be presented before the Union Cabinet to scrap the December 26, 2013 order to set up a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the allegations. Minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju has already indicated that the “politically motivated” decision to set up the inquiry commission will be reviewed by the NDA government. “If a certain Cabinet decision is not implemented then the ministry concerned has to inform the Cabinet Secretariat and a move is initiated to withdraw the decision,” an official ...
