UN experts asks India to protect journalist Rana Ayyub from online hate campaign 27.5.2018 General News
A group of UN human rights experts has expressed concern over continued threats to journalist Rana Ayyub, calling on the Indian government to urgently take steps to protect her and ensure the threats against her are promptly and thoroughly investigated. "We are highly concerned that the life of Rana Ayyub is at serious risk following these graphic and disturbing threats," said the UN experts. Ayyub is an independent journalist and writer whose work has included investigations into alleged crimes committed by public and government officials. The experts recalled the murder of another Indian journalist, Gauri Lankesh, who had also received death threats for her work. Lankesh, who was shot dead in September last year outside her home in Bangalore, had written critically about religious fundamentalism, the governing party and right-wing politics, as well as the caste system. The 14th season finale of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs on Zee Kannada, took place on May 26 and finalist Vishwaprasad managed to bag the winner's trophy along with a prize money of Rs 5 lakh. The grand finale event was held at White Arcade Convention Centre in Bengaluru. The finalists of season 14 included Ransen Jnanesh, Tejas Shashtri, Keerthana Abhijat Bhat and Vishwaprasad, who fought neck-to-neck to win the show. Finally it was Vishwaparad who took home the trophy and the prize money.  While Vishwaprasad emerged victorious, Tansen and Keerthana ended up at the second runners up spot. Both of them took home a sum of Rs two lakh and runners up trophy each.
