PU transgender student to join Canadian PM for dinner 19.2.2018 General News
A transgender student of Punjab University (PU) here has been invited to a dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday in New Delhi. Dhananjay Chauhan, a transgender student of Department of Human Rights and Duties, PU, has been invited by High Commissioner for Canada to India Nadir Patel to a dinner-reception celebrating Canada-India ties on the occasion of the visit of Justin Trudeau, on February 22 at the residence of the high commissioner of Canada, a PU release said. Dhananjay, also a founder of Saksham Trust, an NGO, has been working to alleviate the plight of transgenders. Earlier, Dhananjay was invited to Netherlands in 2016 to participate in an international meet on rights of transgender people. Further, Dhananjay's frontal role in organising a 'Pride Walk' in the university campus in 2017 resulted in inviting a number of prominent personalities to the university including Consul General Canada Christopher Gibbins, the release added.

The state's new Textile Policy allows cooperative spinning mills and powerloom societies to change the use of land, which allows them to engage in other than industrial purposes. The district administration has decided to construct two public toilets in the city for members of the transgender community. The move comes after representatives of the Sarthi Trust, which works for the community, met District Collector Sachin Kurve and demanded separate public toilets for transgenders. "We have decided to set up two (public) toilets for the transgender community in Pachpaoli and Sitabuldi areas. The sites were suggested by the trust," Kurve told PTI. Nikunj Joshi, CEO of Sarathi Trust, said there were about 1,200 transgenders in the city. The Philippine military has welcomed its first transgender officer, the defence department said Thursday, swearing in a prominent member of Congress as a reservist.
