The Punjab government today said that it has so far approved financial assistance of Rs 8.88 crore in 314 cases of farmer suicide. The State Level Committee (SLC) constituted in this regard has sanctioned the relief in 10 meetings held till date starting from April last year, state Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria was quoted as saying in an official release. The minister said the SLC in its 10th meeting, approved Rs 53 lakh in 18 such cases, including six from Bathinda district, four in Mansa, six in Tarn Taran and two in Patiala. He claimed that with the release of Rs 8.88 crore, the Congress government had provided the highest ever relief to families of farmers who committed suicide since the launch of this scheme in 2015. Sarkaria said the financial assistance to the next of the kin of the deceased was being provided on the directives of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Five people have been booked for abetment to suicide days after a farmer allegedly ended his life in a village in Zira sub-division here, police said today. Jatinder Singh (25) committed suicide three days ago in Kacharbhann village and it was alleged that he killed himself after some people got a plot of land belonging to his family registered in their names, they said. The accused, identified as Rachhpal Singh, his wife, Sarbjit Kaur, Jagtar Singh, Gurjit Singh and Nishan Singh were booked under sections 306 of the IPC, officials said. A case was registered against a superintending engineer (SE) and a junior engineer (JE) of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) after a cloth merchant allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front a train here. According to a complaint lodged by Karanpreet Singh, the victim's father, Jatinderpal ended his life as he was allegedly not allowed to pay his pending electricity bill in instalments. "Jatinderpal was not doing well in his business and had suffered losses. His electricity bill also accumulated to over Rs 96,000," Singh said. He had requested the SE and the JE to allow him to pay the bill in instalments but his requests were turned down, Singh alleged. Karanpreet said about three days ago, the PSPCL employees had disconnected their electricity connection. An upset Jatinderpal left the house last evening and later called up his wife, Maninder Kaur, to inform her that he had decided to end his life, Singh said.
