Minor ends life seeing father's helplessness to pay fee 28.4.2017 deccanherald.com
A 16-year-old boy in Punjab committed suicide to "relieve his father of the guilt" of not being able to fulfil his dream of studying further. The incident has once again brought to the fore the predicament of debt-ridden farmers in Punjab. Gurjinder Singh, who hung himself on Thursday night in Nagla village, was his parent's only child and they wanted him to grow up and help them get out of debt and poverty. But now they say all their hopes have come to an end. Gurjinder had passed the Class X examination and wanted to join a private school to study further. Apart from studies, Gurjinder was ready to sweat it out with his father during the sowing season. Over the years, his father's debt rose to over Rs 5 lakh. Gurjinder spoke to his father of his plans to study further, but his father's helplessness was often writ large on his face. Soon, Gurjinder stopped asking about his education, though it was very hard for him to give up on studies. When he could not bear it any further, Gurjinder decided to end ...

No systemic measures yet in disaster management 28.4.2017 Deccan Herald - Analysis
Disaster management wears different attires in various disaster seasons. Let's start with a paradox: according to the latest Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) figures, more than 1,600 people have died in the recent past due to extreme weather events. However, we will never know the exact number of people who have died in heat waves, farmer suicides and cold waves. Of late, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has been burdened to deal with multiple natural and man-made disasters. Emerging research has shown that climate change is ushering in atmospheric and geological changes, which is throwing up newer future catastrophes. In 2016, the NDMA released the National Disaster Management Plan. This is a step forward in the right direction, but implementation of the plan document is still a far cry. Take the case of the recent Gopalganj flooding in Bihar. In the time it took the state government to declare it a disaster - as was the case - the Union government was unable able to waive of the ...

The Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar today said that lack of "spirituality" was one of the reasons that leads to farmer suicides. He was speaking to reporters at a program here. To a question about farmer suicides in Maharashtra and elsewhere, the spiritual leader said, "We have done pad-yatra in 512 villages of Vidarbha, and on that basis we can say that poverty alone is not the reason behind the farmer suicides. They lack spirituality. "Therefore, I appeal to all the people who work in this field (of spirituality) to reach out to farmers," he said. Yoga and pranayam were essential to "remove suicidal tendencies" among the farmers, he said. Asked about the controversy over the cultural event organised by Art of Living Foundation on the banks of Yamuna which is alleged to have damaged the rivers floodplains, Ravi Shankar said, "The truth will triumph."
