S.Africa declares drought a 'national disaster' 13.2.2018 General News
South Africa today declared a "national disaster" over a drought that has ravaged parts of the country and threatened to leave the city of Cape Town without domestic tap water. In a notice published in the government gazette, the department of cooperative governance said it had elevated the drought to a "national disaster" after reassessing its "magnitude and severity". Cape Town is in the grip of a catastrophic three-year-long drought as sparse winter rains have failed to bring relief, and dam levels have dropped to dangerously low levels. South Africa's second city is now facing the prospect of having to turn its taps off under a so-called "Day Zero" scenario to conserve the city's remaining water supplies. Today, the predicted date for Day Zero was pushed back to June 11 after consumption cuts. But widespread drought has gripped large parts of the south and west of South Africa. The statement said that declaring a national disaster would mean that the national government was ...

Siddaramaiah govt adopting Kerala, WB models to target 6.2.2018 General News
The Karnataka BJP has alleged that the Siddaramaiah-led government in the state was adopting the West Bengal and Kerala models for targeting its workers and "committing political murders". The Karnataka BJP Digital Communications Team made the accusation in a statement yesterday on social media site Facebook. "Never in Karnataka history had people witnessed political murders in large numbers. Karnataka, under Siddaramaiah, is following West Bengal and Kerala models for committing political murders," it said. The team also alleged that never in the state's history had a state minister (K J George) been charged as the first accused in a case related to the death of a senior police official. The CBI had in October last year named George as an accused in an FIR filed in connection with the alleged suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M K Ganapathy. The BJP social media team also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- during his February 4 public rally here --

Cong targets Modi over farmers' suicide 5.2.2018 Deccan Herald - News

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that farmers were his top priority, the Congress on Monday targeted him for farmers suicides in Maharashtra.

To mark the conclusion of the BJPs 90-day Nava Nirman Parivarthan yatra across poll-bound Karnataka, on Sunday, Modi, while addressing a rally in Bengaluru, had said: "Farmers are my top priority, and by TOP I mean Tomato, Onion and Potato. If Yeddyurappa, the son of a farmer, becomes the chief minister of Karnataka, the projects for farmers will work at its best because he has the farmers best interest at heart."

However, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President and former chief minister Ashok Chavan in a tweet countered Modis statement.

"More than 13,000 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during last the 3.5 years of the BJP regime. Does that indicate the governments priority towards the issues of farmers," Chavan, an MP from Nanded, tweeted.

Conserve lakes, curb illegal constructions to prevent urban 4.2.2018 General News
Disallowing unauthorised constructions in low-lying areas, conservation of lakes and putting in place a good drainage system are some of the major steps needed to prevent disasters due to urban flooding, said experts. Urban flooding is a global phenomenon and is caused by climate change, they said. "It (urban flooding) is a phenomenon which is caused due to climate change. Unless and until we take all the safeguards, it will not be possible to really check urban flooding," D S Meshram, President Emeritus, Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), told PTI.
