Cong slams Maha for "frequent" amendments to loan waiver 26.4.2018 General News
The opposition Congress today slammed the BJP-led Maharashtra government for "frequently altering" the contours of the loan waiver scheme since its launch in June last year. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson Sachin Sawant said the state government was never serious about the implementation of the loan waiver. The Congress also questionned the state government's claim about the number of beneficiary farmers. "The state government had said that 89 lakh farmers will benefit from the Rs 34,000 crore loan waiver. The Congress has been saying that the number of farmers who have defaulted on loan payment is calculated since 2001. However, the government is lying by insisting that the number of farmers is calculated from 2012. "The government then included the defaulter farmers since 2009 and now from 2001 as the beneficiaries of the loan waiver. However, the number of beneficiary farmers remains the same," Sawant said. The state Cabinet on Tuesday ...

Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018: Congress, BJP plays blame game, North Karnataka parched 26.4.2018 DNA: Urban Tales
The dispute over Mahadayi river which has been on the boil since the 80s, has reached a flash point in the parched North Karnataka region in the run-up to the state Assembly elections. The farmers here want Karnataka to build a series of dams, canals and barrages to route Mahadayi river water to the Malaprabha basin and the namesake dam off Saundatti in Belgaum district to meet the drinking and irrigation requirements of the water-scarce Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad and Belgaum districts. Over 500 farmers from the region including several women and children are leaving on Wednesday night for Delhi under the umbrella organisation Karnataka Rayat Sena (KRS). They have been given an appointment to meet President Ram Nath Kovind on April 29 where they will submit a memorandum, KRS chairperson Veeresh Sobradamat told DNA. "In the memorandum, we have asked the Centre to intervene and give us water as the region has seen several farmer suicides because of lack of water. If the Centre can't do that, they should ...

Amplifying the BJP-Shiv Sena differences, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his Cabinet colleague from the ally party today spoke in divergent voices over a proposed multi-billion dollar refinery project being strongly opposed by the Sena. Industries Minister Subhash Desai, a senior Sena leader, announced in Ratnagiri that the government notification for acquiring land for the project in Nanar, over 350 kilometres from here, has been cancelled. Hours later, the chief minister, however, contradicted him, saying the order has not been cancelled. "What Desai said was his personal opinion. The notification (to acquire land) can be cancelled only by a high-powered committee. The government has not yet cancelled the notification," Fadnavis told reporters here on the sidelines of a function. A high-powered committee, headed by the state's chief secretary, is mandated to deal with issues related to land acquisition. Earlier in the day, Desai said at a public function in Nanar
