TN farmers to protest until all demands met 23.3.2017 DNA: Wide Angle
The 80-odd men who are protesting with skulls at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi have decided to continue their protest after a central team recommended 'partly' assistance of Rs 2,096.80 crore as drought relief. The skulls, the protesters say, are the remains of Tamil farmers who committed suicide due to severe drought. These men have been protesting at Jantar Mantar — the protest site in the Capital — since March 14. "We are going to continue the protest indefinitely until the Centre fulfils all our demands. The state government has sought Rs 39,565 crore as drought relief from the National Disaster Response Fund. But the central team has recommended a partly sum of Rs 2,096.80 crore as drought relief. It is grossly inadequate. The state has witnessed an unprecedented drought in the last 150 years and the whole state has been declared drought-hit," South Indian Rivers Inter-Linking Farmers Association president P Ayyakannu who is leading the protest told DNA over the phone. Farmers at risk as number of money lenders rises in Maha 18.3.2017 DNA: Top News
The number of licensed private money lenders has increased by 22.5 per cent in Maharashtra, which the opposition says is a reason that farmer suicides will take place in greater numbers. In the last three years, more than 8,000 farmers have committed suicide in the state. According to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra 2016-17, “In 2015, 1,589 new licences were issued while 1,947 licences had been issued in 2016. Private money lenders have disbursed Rs 1,254.97 crore in loans in 2016 as against Rs 896.34 crore in 2015. This is almost a 40-per cent increase in loan disbursement by private money lenders.” The state government tabled the Economic Survey 2016-17 in the state legislature on Friday. Raju Shetty, an MP of Swabhimani Shekari Sangathan, said that the national banks are blatantly refusing to provide loans to poverty-ridden ...
