Women SHGs in Ukhand to be trained in making LED lights 7.3.2018 General News
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat today launched a programme for women self-help groups at Thano near here which will train them in making LED lights. The five-day programme named LED Gram Light Training programme will train 50 women from 10 SHGS in making LED bulbs, tubelights and chandeliers and help them stand on their own feet, the Chief Minister said. If women become self-dependent, they will automatically be empowered, Rawat said assuring the women of making proper arrangement for the marketing of their products once they are ready. It will not only help women stand on their feet and generate revenue for the state by boosting sale of local products but will also help stop sale of Chinese items of home decor, Rawat said. Energy secretary Radhika Jha welcomed the initiative saying it will generate self-employment opportunities for women in rural areas.

'Debt-ridden' farmer allegedly kills self 1.3.2018 General News
A 30 year-old "debt-ridden" farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling at his residence, police said today. Maniram Salame took the extreme step in Sitadongri village of the district late last evening when his kin had gone to attend a religious programme in a nearby village, said Chicholi police station in-charge Sunil Lata. Lata said, as per his kin, Salame had taken a loan of Rs one lakh from a self-help group and was unable to repay it. "However, no land was registered on Salame's name in the revenue records. We have handed over his body to the kin after the post-mortem and a probe is on," the police officer said. Meanwhile, his father Bhujal Salame claimed that Maniram was under stress after his crop got destroyed in the recent hailstorm. The villagers today staged a road blockade on the National Highway-59A following the incident.
