Afghan capital's thirsty residents dig deep to combat drought, overuse 1.3.2017
Kabul: A growing population is straining water supplies in Afghanistan's capital, forcing those who can afford it to dig unregulated wells ever deeper to tap a falling water table. Finding water in arid Afghanistan is virtually always a challenge, but a drop in the groundwater level in Kabul caused by overuse and drought is making it even more difficult for residents, especially the poor. Modern Kabul was originally planned to support about 1 million people, but is now home to more than 4.6 million, according to U.S. government estimates, with people fleeing violence and seeking jobs thronging into urban centers. Several unseasonably dry winters, with little rain and a dusting of snow, have exacerbated the problem. Heavy rain and snow this year has raised hopes that groundwater can be replenished, at least for a while. "The increase in population and drought has resulted in a shortage of water in Kabul, so more people are demanding deeper wells to get it," said Aslam Khan, who runs a well-digging ...

No project against people's wishes: Union min Dharmendra Pradhan 28.2.2017
Chennai: Allaying apprehensions of the people and also attempting to take on political parties opposing the hydrocarbon project in Tamil Nadu, Union minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan said the proposed project will not affect the groundwater or agriculture in the area. “In the past weeks, concerns have been raised over the impact of the project on agriculture, soil condition in the region, contamination of ground water table, effect of Methane generation, etc. There is no scope for such apprehensions. The project will only help to reduce India's oil imports,” Mr Dharmendra was said to have conveyed to Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan on Monday. Ruling out any adverse effects on environment, he said the extraction of oil and gas from sub-surface is a well-established practice and the E&P industry uses state-of-the-art technology for the operations and takes maximum care for environmental effects. The operators also get ...

No sand mining in Coastal Regulation Zone: NGT 28.2.2017
UDUPI: In a major victory for environmentalists, the National Green Tribunal (South Zone) on Monday stopped sand mining in the guise of sand bar removal, an order which would put an end to excavation of sand in areas under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). Activists opposing sand mining said NGT’s verdict would render all permits granted for mining in CRZ ineffective. “The NGT (SZ) delivered a judgement today in favour of applicants Mr Udaya Suvarna and others in the Udupi Sand mining case. The tribunal pronounced that sand mining in the name of sand bar removal cannot be permitted. Most of the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) notifications for sand bar removal have not been followed. All permits issued for sand removal stands cancelled with today’s order. There has been violation of the guidelines. The process of identification of sand bar itself is faulty. Udupi administration has not involved local civil society while giving permits which is mandatory according to ...

Crocodiles at Manjira sanctuary face summer woe 28.2.2017
Hyderabad: Lack of proper care and attention by forest departments pose a threat to crocodile habitat in Manjeera sanctuary. Crocodiles frequently seen moving into the fields in villages on the banks of the river near Zaheerabad, Nyalkal, and in Hothi-K and Raikode mandals during summer. Forest officials catch at least half-a-dozen crocodiles from these mandals every year. In November and December 2015, as many as 14 crocodiles were caught while in 2016, around 7 crocodiles were caught. Human settlements going up near water sources, increased use of water, fishing nets and nest destruction degrade their habitat. Sand mining, river linking, projects on the river-fronts, dams and barrages result from settlements. Industries dumping waste in rivers adversely effect the ecology threatening the wildlife. A senior official from the forest department, on condition of anonymity, said, “We make sure that there is no disturbance to the habitat and human activities are kept to the minimum in order to protect the ...
