Despite Centre, Maharashtra crackdown, 75,000 daily wage sand miners work without safety measures 13.8.2018 DNA: India
Raghunath Bartade watched helplessly as his brother was dragged off the sand-mining boat, his leg tangled in the anchor rope and his arms flailing as he sank into the murky creek near Mumbai. Moments earlier, Raghunath and Babban Bartade had been dredging sand by hand from the bottom of the creek - an often deadly trade that fuels the nation’s booming construction industry, and continues despite an official crackdown. "We found his body within minutes," said Bartade, adding that he has witnessed several incidents of drowning since he began mining sand 13 years ago. "The miners usually drift away in the water and their body surfaces days later," he said, standing outside his hut in Bharatpada village in Palghar district adjoining Mumbai on a rainy afternoon with his brother's children hovering close by. Babban's death in June came a year after a Thomson Reuters Foundation investigation revealed workers were drowning while illegally mining sand in Vasai Creek, one of the two main distributaries of the ...

Heavy rains in Kerala; red alert sounded at Idamalayar dam 8.8.2018 DNA: Popular News
Heavy rains lashed several parts of Kerala today, leading to copious inflows into reservoirs and sounding of a red alert at Idamalayar dam in Ernakulam district. The rapid rise in water levels at the dam led the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) to prepone opening of the shutters to 6 AM tomorrow from 8 AM. The KSDMA took the decision at its meeting here today. It asked the public not to panic and said that if the water level rises to 170 meters before 6 AM tomorrow, only one shutter would be opened and 82 cusecs released. "The increase in water level downstream due to this limited discharge is estimated to be contained within the river banks," it said in a release. KSDMA said that a decision on having a trial run to open the shutters of Idukki dam at 2,398 feet would be taken after assessing the situation on a concurrent basis and be announced subsequently, if necessary. The water level in the Idukki reservoir touched 2396.96 feet this afternoon against its full level of 2,403 ...

Tonnes of sludge lies between cemented banks of Dravyavati riverfront as it nears the inauguration.  Monsoon showers have flushed away several mud anicates dams built along the riverfront and left behind large amounts of sludge when the water receded. Its disposal remains a challenge ahead of authorities as the project is scheduled to be inaugurated by September. “There has not been any major damage to the project, it’s mostly the temporary structures that have been breached. As far as sludge is concerned, the contractor firm will clear it out,” says an official of Jaipur Development Authority. Contractor firm is though still waiting for ‘official’ directions from the development Authority regarding clearing the canals. Meanwhile, the monsoon response teams deployed by the authority remain occupied fixing the reported damages. Accumulation of sludge continues to increase difficulties for the development agencies. It has subjected uncompleted portions of the riverfront to unaccounted load. The pumping of ...
