Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the first phase of Delhi-Meerut expressway here.Stretching from Nizamuddin Bridge in Delhi to Delhi UP Border, the14-lane highway will reduce the travel time between the two cities to only 45 minutes from the present about four to five hours.Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was also present at the inauguration event.Soon after the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister Modi held a roadshow in an open jeep on the expressway. People in big numbers gathered to get a glimpse of him during the roadshow.This project will provide faster and safer connectivity between Delhi and Meerut. People from the NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will particularly benefit from this project.Later in the day, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the country's first smart and green highway, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh.The 135-km expressway is built at a cost of Rs. 11,000 crore.

Abbasi inaugurates 1st section of CPEC's superhighway 27.5.2018 General News
Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has inaugurated the first section of the 392-km Multan-Sukkur Motorway, which is the largest transportation infrastructure project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) On Saturday.It lies in the country's eastern Punjab province, Multan.Earlier, Abbasi opened the 33-km section from Multan to Shujaabad city for the public.As per Xinhua, this six-lane superhighway will connect Karachi with Peshawar through the provinces of Punjab and Sindh.The motorway also called M-5 is expected to reduce the travel distance between Multan and Sukkur from 463 km to 392 km. Section 144 has been lifted in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu where 13 people were killed during a violent protest against the construction of copper unit by the Sterlite mining industries.Earlier, to ward off any further violence Section 144, which prohibits assembly of more than four people in an area, was imposed in the district.On Saturday, Thoothukudi District Collector said that normalcy has been restored in the district and no act of violence has been reported from past 24 hours."Normalcy has been restored in the city and the district. We have not noticed any unusual incident in the city in last 24 hrs. However, we have come across some incidents in the rural areas and we are reviewing the situations," Sandeep Nanduri told ANI.The people here are up in arms against the construction of a copper plant, claiming that it was polluting groundwater and was hazardous for the environment.
