On December 31 2020, the newsrack service will be shut down permanently.

It has been a nice long run from the Sarai days in 2004 to being hosted on its own domain around 2006. Beside maintenance, there has been no real active development on the code or the features since early 2008. Since 2015, even all that maintenance was pretty bare bones. A lot of news sources no longer provide reliable RSS feeds and since mid 2018, there were growing issues with the service and I only kept it alive to assist a handful of users.

So, it is time to shut this down. The internet world in 2020 is vastly differently from 2003 when I first conceptualized this service. Thanks for using this all these years.

Harsh text 17.1.2012 Telegraph: Opinion
Very little can be going right in a school education system if a large number of pupils in Class V cannot read a Class III– level text. While this may indicate the state of education in rural areas all over India, other figures demonstrate an actual decline in places such as West Bengal. There the percentage of pupils who can do simple division in Class V has fallen from an already unnerving 37.7 in 2010 to 31.4 in 2011. The Annual Status of Education Report 2011, the source of these facts, does show that some states have improved: Gujarat, Punjab and Tamil Nadu in reading and Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in simple arithmetic. But that can hardly be a consolation when the overall picture is so discouraging. The fanfare around the Right to Education Act seems hollow now, since the increase in the number of children being enrolled has obviously not been accompanied by a serious effort to either impart education of quality or monitor achievement levels.
