            Employment generation coupled with improving employability is the priority concern of the Government. Ministry of Rural Development has been implementing ‘The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005’ which provides at least one hundred days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

When we started work in Devdungri thirty years ago, moving into a mud hut in a tiny hamlet in central Rajasthan, it was in the midst of a very bad drought. We could see that there was deep distress that affected the whole community, and many families were eating only once a day. People came together easily, and in large numbers, to petition the government, “we are not begging for alms, we want work. If we get work and wages, we will fight the drought with the fruit of our labour, and with our dignity intact.” Those above the age of 35, and familiar with rural Rajasthan, will remember how every drought would be characterised by thousands of people gathering at the homes of sarpanches, and petty government officials hoping to get work. Subgroup of Chief Ministers to look at how NREGA can help agriculture 20.6.2018 DNA: India
The Centre on Tuesday announced a subgroup of chief ministers, who will work on the convergence of MNGREGS and agriculture policies. The subgroup, to be convened by Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Chouhan, has Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling, along with NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand as members. During the Niti Aayog deliberations on doubling of farmers' income, Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu suggested that MNREGS could be used effectively during the pre-sowing and post-harvest process to reduce agrarian distress. The subgroup said that it will submit a report in the next three months, and will hold its first meeting sometime in July. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is among the seven chief ministers who have been included in a committee that will make recommendations on a coordinated policy approach on the subject of 'Agriculture and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The committee was announced at the fourth meeting of the NITI Aayog Governing Council in New Delhi on Sunday.
