Manipur civil rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila married her long time British boyfriend Desmond Coutinho in Kodaikanal in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.

After formally completing all the formalities in the register office, the couple exchanged garlands. Sources from the registrar office said that the couple came in the morning and duly signed the register after fulfilling all the requirements as per law.

The couple had been staying in Kodaikanal for the last two months to complete the legal process for their wedding as some political outfits opposed their marriage.

Sharmila also obtained their marriage documents under the "Special Marriage Act 1954" from the register office.

The couple didnt distributed invitation cards since they decided that their wedding event should be simple. Even the family members of both the bride and the bridegroom did not attend the wedding.

A ceremonial function would soon be held at a local church.
