Indo-Nepal dam faces uncertain future 30.1.2018 Deccan Herald - Opinion
A 5,600 MW power project along the Mahakali river, which flows between Nepal and Uttarakhand is yet another sub-Himalayan hydropower project causing a great deal of concern, not only among over 30,000 affected families but also environmentalists, social activists and others. The current agitation against this huge hydropower dam is a reminder of the previous such agitations against dams that have already been built in Uttarakhand in the central Himalayas, such as the 2,400 MW Tehri dam, which continues to face stiff problems even years after its commissioning. It descends from 11,800 feet at Kalapani to 660 feet as it enters the Terai plains, ...

Kaushal said that he would not let the tax payers' money go to waste in the stalled hydel-power projects and launch a movement for the withdrawal of the notification. Threatening that his organisation -- RLEK -- would "fight in the streets and courts" for revival of the stalled projects, the activist alleged that the notification had no scientific backing. To buttress his argument, he referred to a resolution passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on March 29, 2011. The resolution had opposed the Centre's notification on the ground that no opinion was sought from ...
