JK Rowling hints new Harry Potter movie to reveal 'American Hogwarts' 9.6.2015 The Guardian -- World Latest

Twitter exchange suggests Harry Potter author will also draw on Native American traditions for the ‘magizoology’ script she is working on

JK Rowling has confirmed on Twitter that the existence of a long-mooted American school of witchcraft and wizardry could be revealed in new Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

During an ad-hoc question and answer session with fans on the social network, the British author was asked to name the institution which US students of magic might attend in the Potter universe. While she refused to do so, Rowling did reveal a series of titbits regarding the hitherto-unidentified school.

Alfonso Cuarón wins best director Oscar 3.3.2014 The Guardian -- World Latest
Mexican film-maker takes Academy award for space thriller Gravity, seeing off challenge of 12 Years a Slave's Steve McQueen • How the night unfolded • Full list of winners Alfonso Cuarón has won the best director Oscar for Gravity at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a field that included 12 Years a Slave's Steve McQueen, Nebraska's Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street. In doing so, Cuarón becomes the first Mexican-born director to win the award. With a back catalogue including Mexican road movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, dystopian near-future parable Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Cuarón has been nominated for Oscars before, but not in this category. Gravity, the space-walk thriller starring Sandra Bullock as a scientist stranded in Earth's orbit after her craft is crippled by debris, has proved a huge box-office hit, as well as a showcase for cutting-edge visual effects. It has already won Cuarón major best director awards at the Golden ...

Who is Amanda Knox? 8.2.2014 The Guardian -- World Latest
Simon Hattenstone has been corresponding with Amanda Knox since 2009, and was with her as she awaited the verdict in her retrial for the murder of Meredith Kercher. Here she talks about her second guilty verdict, life in prison and being a 'marked' woman 3 August 2009 Dear Simon Hattenstone, Hello, I have to say I'm a bit nervous about writing this letter because I'm not sure what I think about journalists and journalism any more. My entire life I've looked up to the profession quite a bit, even considered it as a profession to look into myself, until all that was thrown completely out of whack and I was left feeling really shocked, lost, betrayed and really angry. That was the first thing Amanda Knox wrote to me, four years ago. I had interviewed Amanda Knox's mother Edda Mellas a few months earlier , and sent a copy of the article to Knox at the Perugia prison where she had been held in custody for nearly two years, charged alongside her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito with the ...

Lady and the Unicorn tapestry brought back to life 29.12.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
'Mona Lisa of woven artworks' goes back on display at its Paris museum home after a two-year restoration It has inspired novels and songs, featured in Harry Potter movies and puzzled historians for the best part of 500 years. The Lady and the Unicorn , regarded as the Mona Lisa of woven artworks, is one of the greatest surviving artefacts of its kind from the Middle Ages. Now the tapestry, which is in fact a series of six wool and silk tapestries woven in Flanders in the 16th century, can be seen in an entirely new light after a major clean and restoration. Nearly two years ago, the hangings – five believed to depict the five senses and a sixth bearing the motto " A mon seul désir " (To my only desire) – were taken down from display at the Musée National du Moyen Age in Paris, where they had been since 1882. Time and decades of dust had taken their toll on the colours, and the lining from which the tapestry was hung was deforming its shape and designs. Over the following few ...

Jungle Book movie to be directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu 5.12.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Warner Bros moving ahead with live-action Rudyard Kipling film, even though a similar project is under way at Disney • Disney to make live action Jungle Book • Why I love ... The Jungle Book Mexican auteur Alejandro González Iñárritu, renowned for high-minded dramas such as Babel and 21 Grams , is being lined up to direct a big-budget adaptation of The Jungle Book, it has been reported . The live action version of Rudyard Kipling's classic adventure would be Iñárritu's first putative blockbuster, though he has regularly shot in English – notably 21 Grams and the upcoming Birdman, a comedy starring Emma Stone and Michael Keaton. However, this live-action Jungle Book, written by Harry Potter's Steve Kloves and back by Warner Bros, is facing serious competition in the shape of a similar project from Disney , which earlier this year was reported to have attached Iron Man's Jon Favreau as director. Disney recently confirmed an October 2015 release date for their movie, so it would appear ...

Paul Walker: Fast and Furious star was typecast and proud 1.12.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Actor's private love of cars and motor-racing scene meshed with his on-screen persona of petrol-head cop Brian O'Conner It is always a danger for actors to become wholly identified with one big role, one hit franchise. For a while, Sean Connery was James Bond, but then showed he was dramatically licensed to do something other than kill, flirt, seduce and handle gadgets. Daniel Radcliffe grew away from Harry Potter and in future Jennifer Lawrence will in all probability detach herself from Katniss Everdeen. But Paul Walker became entirely associated with the role of tousle-haired blond boy racer Brian O'Conner in the Fast and the Furious movie franchise: O'Conner is a cop with some bad-boy attitude who goes undercover in the street-racing scene to catch criminals and have car chases. Walker's death in a car crash after a Los Angeles charity event this weekend grimly seals the association, although he was the passenger in a friend's red Porsche, and not in fact behind the wheel. That movie ...

Temple Run movie heading for the big screen 13.11.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Film based on smartphone game about an idol-stealing explorer set to follow Angry Birds movie into production • Angry Birds film takes off • Frozen: watch the trailer for Disney's new animated film Indiana Jones-style smartphone game Temple Run looks set to be the latest example of the form to make its way to the big screen, after Hollywood studio Warner Bros entered negotiations for a film version overseen by Harry Potter producer David Heyman. The hugely popular Imangi Studios title looks rather more ripe for celluloid conversion than the upcoming Angry Birds . It centres on an explorer who is chased by demonic monkeys after stealing an idol from a temple. The film adaptation would follow much the same plot, though the demonic chasing entities are now described simply as "forces". It's not the first time Temple Run has teamed up with Hollywood. Developers also released tie-in versions with Disney films Brave (in 2012) and Oz the Great and Powerful (February 2013), which saw the ...

Swedish cinemas take aim at gender bias with Bechdel test rating 6.11.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Movies need to pass test that gauges the active presence of women on screen in bid to promote gender equality You expect movie ratings to tell you whether a film contains nudity, sex, profanity or violence. Now cinemas in Sweden are introducing a new rating to highlight gender bias, or rather the absence of it. To get an A rating, a movie must pass the so-called Bechdel test, which means it must have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. "The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, all Star Wars movies, The Social Network, Pulp Fiction and all but one of the Harry Potter movies fail this test," said Ellen Tejle, the director of Bio Rio, an art-house cinema in Stockholm's trendy Södermalm district. Bio Rio is one of four Swedish cinemas that launched the new rating last month to draw attention to how few movies pass the Bechdel test. Most filmgoers have reacted positively to the initiative. "For some people it has been an eye-opener," ...

'Hobbitses' and Frankenstein: how pop culture's words become official | Kory Stamper 24.5.2013 Guardian: Comment is Free
Though fantasy and sci-fi have invented hundreds of new words, only a few pass muster to make it into the dictionary Water cooler conversation at a dictionary company tends towards the odd. A while ago I was chatting with one of my colleagues about our respective defining batches. "I'm not sure," he said, "what to do about the plural of 'hobbit'. There are some citations for 'hobbitses', but I think they may be facetious uses. Have any thoughts?" I did: "We enter 'hobbit' into the dictionary?" You learn something new every day. Pop culture is a goldmine of neologisms, and science fiction and fantasy is one rich seam that has been contributing to English for hundreds of years. Yes, hundreds: because what is Gulliver's Travels but a fantasy satire of 18th-century travel novels? And what is Frankenstein but science fiction? The name of Mary Shelley's monster lives on both as its own word and as a combining form used in words like " frankenfood ". And Swift's fantasy novel was so evocative, ...
