'Delink ICANN from US jurisdiction' 11.11.2016 deccanherald.com
Eight Indian civil society organisations involved with internet governance have called for complete delinking of ICANN from US jurisdiction, saying an important global public infrastructure being subject to a single country's control is unacceptable. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. The demand from Bengaluru-based Centre for Internet and Society and IT for Change as well as Delhi-based Software Freedom Law Centre among others came against the backdrop of ICANN's meeting in Hyderabad that ended on Wednesday. The other organisations involved in the campaign are Free Software Movement of India (Hyderabad), Society for Knowledge Commons, Digital Empowerment Foundation, Delhi Science Forum and Third World Network (all in New Delhi). "Urgent steps (should) be taken to transit ICANN from its current US jurisdiction. Only then ...

Women more prone to online bullying, says NGO study 28.10.2015 deccanherald.com
A recent study has revealed that only 17 per cent women seek information online and women, more than men, reported instances of online bullying. Access to the Internet alone does not translate into empowerment of women, according to the study by the World Wide Web (WWW) Foundation and City-based NGO, It for Change. The study further states that having an Internet connection does not necessarily result in access to information for women from economically backward sections of society. As part of the Womens Rights Online study conducted this year, Internet usage patterns of 770 women and 265 men in urban poor neighbourhoods of New Delhi were analysed. Out of the number of people surveyed, 43 per cent of men and 46 per cent of women used internet and Facebook was an 'important part of their internet experience'. Also, as many as 96 per cent of men and 98 per cent of women, used Facebook. While at the surface, poor women in urban areas are part of the consumer pool for the mobile market, quite contrary to ...

Towards democratic Internet governance 24.1.2015 deccanherald.com
The Internet might have pervaded the common mans life but its governance still remains in the hands of a few corporate giants. To counter this, civil society organisations propose democratic Internet governance. Though Google's Eric Schmidt predicts the "disappearance of Internet into the background", a group of organisations have set out to bring to fore voices that have remained in the background in spite of the Internet's all pervasive nature. As the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2015 is in progress in Davos (Jan 21-24), civil society organisations have come together to create a global 'Internet Social Forum' countering the WEFs NETmundial initiative for Internet governance. The organisations aim to create an Internet space governed in public interest. Bengaluru-based organisation IT for Change will be an active part of this global forum, along with five other Indian organisations: Society For Knowledge Commons, All India Peoples Science Network, Free Software Movement of India, SLFC.in and Digital ...

'Take lead in Internet governance for justice' 21.7.2014 deccanherald.com
Exhorting the need to break the hegemony of US-led model of Internet governance, Just Net Coalition (JNC), an international network of representatives from across the globe, has called for an Internet governance model that ensures human rights and social justice. Observing that US model resulted in mass surveillance, leading to violation of people's rights, besides concentration of economic power in the hands of few US-based global corporations, IT for Change Executive Director Parminder Jeet Singh averred India was in a good position to set up efficient Internet governance, since it was not an authoritarian nation. Stating that efficiency depended on how one woke up to the issue, he said, they would be meeting officials in Delhi, to take the programme forward with the government's support. In this regard, stressing the need for tough legislative framework for Internet governance among BRICS countries, JNC noted that BRICS, as a bloc, represented about 40 per cent of world's population and almost 30 per ...
