SHILLONG, Sep 22: The job card holders under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme will be paid compensation from now on should there be any delay in the payment of their wages.
This development has come about after the state cabinet approved a proposal towards this end on Friday.

If you rue over bad pay hike, sample this: This year the NREGA workers got lowest wage hike ever, measly Re 1 in some states. It is this pay 'hike' and number of other issues for which hundreds of NREGA workers have been staging a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar since September 11. These workers, who form the first line of rural job front, are now facing a bleak future. They have now brought their struggle to the Capital and are demanding an increase in wages and work days under the NREGA scheme. Most feel that the paltry pay hike in April is just a way by the Centre to kill the scheme. They also allege that the Centre is 'diluting' the NREGA scheme through budget cuts, low wages and delay in payments. "Its like slow poison to kill the National Rural Guarantee Act (NREGA)," said activist Anuradha Talwar. Released on bail in bribery case, engineer ends life 13.9.2017 Deccan Herald - State
A 27-year-old engineer who was released on bail in a bribery case, committed suicide by setting himself on fire at Vangimalu village of Chintamani taluk on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Srinath Reddy, who was working as a junior engineer on contract basis under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Police said that he was arrested on the charge of receiving bribe during a Lokayukta raid in January 2017. He was released bail recently and was staying at his sisters house in Bengaluru.

On Tuesday night, Reddy immolated self by dousing himself with petrol. In a purported death note left by him, Srinath has stated that he had not received bribe from anyone and had been booked for the offence committed by the panchayat development officer. The mother of Reddy has lodged a complaint.

Family members said that Reddy may have been embarrassed by his arrest and hence ended his life.
