State, district panels to monitor FM radios 6.8.2017 Deccan Herald - News
The Centre has decentralised the mechanism to monitor the content of private FM and community radios, and take action against those violating the rules. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has authorised the state and the district-level monitoring committees to accept complaints against them and take action against any violation of the All India Radio broadcasting code by private radio stations. Until now, they had permission to take up complaints against private satellite television channels only. The decision was taken by the ministry recently in the wake of a Supreme Court advice. The apex court, while hearing a matter earlier in January, has advised the Centre to "formalise" the existing complaint redressal mechanism for content monitoring of private satellite television channels and to "finalise" similar framework for private radio stations as well, a ministry official said. "Since the broadcast of the FM radio channels and community radio stations are in the nature of terrestrial ...

UK community radio station shut down over Al Qaeda broadcasts 29.7.2017 deccanherald.com
An Islamic community radio station in the UK has lost its licence for broadcasting 25 hours of lectures by Al Qaeda recruiter Alman al-Awlaki. Sheffield-based Iman FM was found in breach of broadcast norms by the UKs Office of Communications (Ofcom) for airing the lectures titled The Life of Mohammed by the America-born radical cleric during the holy month of Ramazan between May 26 and June 16. The station claimed that it was unaware of the background of the preacher, who was killed by a US drone strike in Yemen in 2011. "Ofcom has decided that it is necessary in the public interest to revoke the licensees Broadcasting Act licence, and that the licensee is unfit to hold a broadcast licence. The service has been off-air since July 4 and will not be reinstated," said an Ofcom spokesperson. The media regulators investigation found that Al Awlakis lectures included "a direct call to action to members of the Muslim community to prepare for and carry out violent action against non-Muslim people" and ...
