Dowry praised in sociology material, but college denies it's from textbook 20.10.2017 deccanherald.com
A Bengaluru college was accused on Friday of promoting dowry in its study material. St. Josephs Arts and Science College, Shanti Nagar, was at the centre of a social media storm after a page from the chapter on dowry appeared on Facebook, and was reposted by many on Twitter. The college, however, said the chapter was not from a prescribed textbook. "In fact, we have no prescribed textbook for sociology," a college official said. "The students read reference material." Dowry is considered a heinous criminal act by the Supreme Court and the government and attracts penalty and imprisonment. However, in some places, the age-old tradition of a brides father showering the grooms family with gifts of money, precious metals and even property continues. In a Facebook post, Rithika Ramesh shared a page of a B.A. students sociology study material, which shows not one, but at least seven advantages to the dowry system. Some of those benefits it lists are: 1. Dowry makes possible the marriage of ugly girls, who would ...

Dowry is considered a heinous criminal act by the Supreme Court of India and the Government and is liable for penal punishments with fines and statutory imprisonment. However, in some places, the age-old tradition of a brides father showering the grooms family with gifts of money, precious metals and even property continues. Now, one college in Bengaluru, St. Josephs College in Shanti Nagar, to be precise, has been caught teaching the benefits of dowry in its material. SC to revisit verdict on dowry harassment 13.10.2017 Deccan Herald - National
The Supreme Court on Friday decided to reconsider its own judgement that dowry harassment complaints must be vetted by a district level committee before arresting the accused. The top court said the judgement passed on July 27 in 'Rajesh Sharma Vs State of UP and another' "curtailed rights of women". A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Dipak Misra decided to re-examine the verdict passed by a bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit. "We are obligated to state that we are not in agreement with the decision rendered in 'Rajesh Sharma' because we are disposed to think that it really curtails the rights of the women who are harassed under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. That apart, prima facie, we perceive that the guidelines may be in the legislative sphere," the bench said. The July 27 guidelines intended to prevent misuse of Section 498A of IPC (punishing cruelty at the hands of husband or his relatives of a wife...) had come as a big relief to innocent family members of ...

'More women killed in gender violence than armed conflicts in parts of Asia' 13.10.2017 deccanherald.com
Gender-based violence is emerging as one of the deadliest forms of violence in Asia and it has killed more women than armed conflicts in some parts of the region, an expert on conflict said on Friday, calling for more attention to the issue. Researcher Patrick Barron of the U.S.-based non-profit The Asia Foundation said a two-year study on conflicts and violence revealed violence against women in Asia has greater - and more deadly impacts than previously thought. In India for example, the study showed over 8,000 women were killed every year over dowry disputes - a figure far higher than the 278 who died in a Maoist rebellion in eastern India last year. "The evidence is not absolute but it certainly suggested that gender-based violence is one of the largest killers in Asia - if not the largest," Barron told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from Washington. "We see a rise in violence as women assert their rights," the groups conflict and development regional director added. He said the trend was ...
