Dalit protests: Curfew in three MP districts relaxed 4.4.2018 General News
The curfew imposed in Gwalior, Bhind, and Morena districts of Madhya Pradesh after the April 2 Dalit protests was relaxed today as no major incident of violence was reported, police said. Eight persons were killed during the largescale violence during the Bharat bandh called by Dalit groups against alleged dilution of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court. In Gwalior district, the curfew was relaxed from 6 AM to 8 AM and again between 4 PM and 6 PM at Thatipur, Murar, and Gola Ka Mandi area, said district collector Rahul Jain. He said prohibitory orders banning the assembly of people under section 144 of the CrPC will remain in force in Gwalior city. In Bhind city, curfew was relaxed for two hours from 10 AM to 12 noon, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajendra Verma told PTI over phone. A mob tried to storm the residence of Madhya Pradesh minister Lal Singh Arya in Bhind district today, police said, a day after violence erupted in the state during a nationwide bandh called by Dalit outfits to protest the alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act. The death toll in yesterday's violence rose to eight in the state with two more persons succumbing to their injuries today. Arya, a Dalit, was not home when the incident took place. Freezing the nerve that carries hunger signals to the brain may help patients with mild-to-moderate obesity lose weight, a study has found. "We developed this treatment for patients with mild-to-moderate obesity to reduce the attrition that is common with weight-loss efforts," said David Prologo from Emory University School of Medicine in the US. During the procedure, researchers inserted a needle through the patient's back and, guided by live images from a CT scan, used argon gas to freeze the nerve, known as the posterior vagal trunk. This nerve, located at the base of the esophagus, is one of several mechanisms that tells the brain that the stomach is empty. In the study, 10 subjects with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 37 underwent the procedure and were followed for 90 days. All subjects reported decreased appetite and the overall average weight loss was 3.6 per cent of initial body weight and an average decline of nearly 14 percent of the excess BMI.
