The 53rd Lakkhi Padyatra from Jaipur to Diggi Kalyanji took place on Thursday-Friday. Due to Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) efforts, for the first time, the city looked clean during the Padayatra. More than 1,000 dustbins and 750 sanitation workers were roped in by the JMC to look after the cleanliness of the city.  Every year, the 70-kilometre long padyatra takes place and this year, more than 12 lakh people participated in it. During the yatra people put up refreshment centres to serve the padyatris due to which, garbage can be seen strewn on the city roads. Seeing this, mayor Ashok Lahoti especially planned a new setup of cleaning city roads.  During the annual padayatra of Diggi Kalyanji, lakhs of people passed through the roads of the city, but this time the roads were seen clean after Padayatra.  “We have divided Padayatra route into 10 zones and deployed a separate team for cleanliness for each zone during the yatra. 50 JMC officials were appointed in these zones as in charge and co-in charge. ...

SHILLONG, Aug 16: The Government of Meghalaya has been given four weeks to spell out the measures it has taken in regard to ensuring the quality of the Umran River in Ri Bhoi district.
The Meghalaya High Court has given the government this deadline after a PIL which was filed by one Isrin Mawnai.
“We have perused the documents annexed with the affidavit which suggest that various measures have been taken, various proposal have also been moved therefore, the matter is deferred for four weeks to enable the respondents to file the latest status of the action taken,” the Court had said here on Thursday.

SHILLONG, Aug 12: Meghalaya is seriously struggling in managing public wastes, especially, capital Shillong. With the permanent dustbins being dismantled from every localities of the city in the name of maintaining cleanliness and replacing the same by door to door collection of wastes, but the ground realities are otherwise.
There are numerous localities, inside the municipal jurisdiction of the town, where the SMB garbage vans are unable to penetrate due to the unapproachable terrain, which has given rise to garbage mess here.
