A little care goes a long way 17.10.2017 Deccan Herald - Supplements
Deepavali' is the time to splurge on just anything that excites you and makes you happy. The celebrations are never complete without new clothes, mouthwatering food and of course firecrackers. Here are a few tips that can help you stay safe and celebrate in style. Watch what you eat The festive season means a lot of sweets and goodie boxes. Sweets are hard to resist but make sure that you don't eat too much oily food and fried stuff because an overdose of these can leave you feeling sick. Don't eat or gift perishable sweets because they are made long before the festival. Stay hydrated In order to prevent the after festival health problems, drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Sip juice and water at regular intervals. Staying hydrated will also help you manage your hunger pangs. Use chemical-free colours You can always use edible things such as rice, semolina, flour mixed with edible colours. Tea Board's Darjeeling gardens revival package insignificant 17.10.2017 Market News
The Tea Board of India's Rs. 100 crore proposal to the union commerce ministry to revive the 87-odd gardens in Darjeeling hasn't gone well with the industry as it feels it is too low an amount to provide any respite to the estates which resumed operations after an over 100-day closure.Tea estates in Darjeeling closed abruptly in mid-June following escalated political tensions for a separate state of Gorkhaland.Industry officials opined that atleast a Rs. 300 crore bailout package is needed for restoration of the estates and the Board's recommendation falls too short of their projected requisite.Against the recommended Rs. 330 crore bailout package proposed by the Tea Research Association (TRA) for the now sick tea estates in Darjeeling, the Board decided to cut down the amount to just a little over 30 per cent at Rs. 100 crore - its argument is over the fact that the government can provide relief for a part of the loss but can't subsidise part of an industry fully in hard times.Tea ...

Custodian of paddy diversity 16.10.2017 Deccan Herald - Supplements
Take a closer look. They are not coriander seeds but a type of paddy. This is Burma Black rice, good for payasam. The violet colour of the dish makes it appealing. This is a scented variety. We normally add a fistful of this rice with other rice while cooking to get the distinct aroma. This is meese bhatta, check the moustache-like streaks on the grain..." Seventy-two-year-old B K Deva Rao takes a pause to check the harvest activity at the farther end of his five-acre farm in Mittabagilu village of Belthangady taluk. As I look around, I am overwhelmed by the rich tapestry of colours. Blocks of paddy in different shades of brown, green, red and black seem antithetical to the common notion that the colour of paddy straw is green and the seed is brown. Deva Rao takes me through the field to show many other varieties, "Massoori, kayame, rajakayme, chinnaponni, salem sanna, halaga, kaavalakannu, raktasali, gandhasale...." Incredibly diverse While Deva Rao ignites my curiosity by showing the shape, size and ...
