There is a century-old organisation in Kolkata called Artemis Fountain Foundation that has taken up the cause of uplifting the lives of trafficked survivors of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal, by providing them with an alternate source of livelihood through art. Spearheading the setup for three years now are septuagenarian Shipra Banerjee and young Arpita Roy. The survivors are trained in the craft to make appealing and innovative decor items from newspapers by rolling them into various shapes. In a first, newspaper-rolling and fabric painting are done on the items displaying the famed pattachitras of coastal West Bengal. So, the organisation is doing its bit to revive the dying art of the region. Pattachitras are the ancient folk art of rural Bengal (and Odisha) that date back to the 13th century. The craftsmen make use of organic paints, and the artworks are biodegradable and durable. With increasing awareness about the health benefits of millets and organically-grown produces, exhibition and outlets selling such produces have not become very uncommon in recent years, and now, organic and millet lovers have another event to visit in the City, where farmers groups and organic firms have also brought millets, organically grown food grains, and other products. A three-day Organic & Millet Mela, organised by Agriculture Department and Sahaja Samruddha, has begun at Laxmi Sadan at JC Nagar here. Farmers groups from different places are showcasing Navane, Sajje, Baraga, Save, Ragi and other millets, while bamboo rice, flour, honey, juice, Lavancha, herbal products, food products, and cosmetics items are also available. The exhibition, which is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, is aimed at creating awareness among both consumers and farmers about the importance of millets and organic food grains.
