Centre to set up focus groups to expedite smart cities project 20.1.2018 Deccan Herald - National
The Centre has decided to set up five to six focus groups to expedite the smart cities project, which has shown poor progress two years on. These expert groups will provide guidance on mobilising funds, addressing the areas related to facilitating differently abled, womens security and connecting with young professionals in developing urban amenities. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had launched the Smart Cities Mission in June 2015 to develop 100 cities with world class facilities. However, the scheme has been lagging due to various reasons, including urban local bodies inability to raise funds and opposition from residents to levy of user charges to mop up funds for development works. According to data presented by the Ministry in Parliament, in the last two-and-a-half years, only 5.2% of the total identified projects have been completed. New Delhi, January 19

Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli has topped the list of nine cities chosen in the fourth round of the National Smart Cities Challenge, said Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri here today.

The other eight cities selected in the challenge are Erode (Tamil Nadu), Diu (Daman and Diu), Biharsharif (Bihar); Bareilly, Moradabad and Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) and Kavaratti (Lakshwadeep).

Previously, 20 cities were selected in January 2016, 13 in May 2016, 27 in September 2016 and 30 cities in June 2017.

With nine new cities, the total number of Smart Cities has gone up to 99.

Addressing a press conference, the minister said the winning cities had improved the quality of their Smart City proposals by 19 per cent to become eligible for selection. Each city has developed a unique vision and has selected an area that will be developed as a lighthouse, to be replicated by the city. — TNS

Three cities of Uttar Pradesh are among nine chosen in the latest round of the Centre's flagship Smart Cities Mission, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said today. The number of cities picked under the project now stands at 99. Under the scheme, each city will get Rs 500 crore from the Centre for implementing various projects. An equal amount, on matching basis, will have to be contributed by the state or urban local bodies. The nine cities chosen in the fourth round are -Bareilly, Moradabad and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Erode in Tamil Nadu, Bihar Sharif in Bihar, Silvasa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Diu in Daman and Diu, Kavarati in Lakshadweep and Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. A joint report by SEEDS and Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) claims that floods top the list of natural disasters since 2000, with 56% of smart cities falling in high flood risk districts. In the SEEDS-CRED report titled Decoding the Monsoon Floods - had analysed disaster data from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Myanmar between 2000 and 2017. The report reveals that more than 2200 cities and towns in India are located in districts which have witnessed at least 11 floods in the last 18 years. One of the findings states that 56% of Indias planned smart cities fall in districts reporting a high number of flood events, signifying the scale of investments that need to be secured against future risks, according to a press statement released on Friday. Centre asks Telangana, Andhra Pradesh to submit UCs for AMRUT 19.1.2018
Hyderabad: The Central government has asked TS and AP governments to send utilisation certificates for the funds released under AMRUT scheme in the current financial year.  In a letter to the state governments Rajesh Kumar, under secretary (AMRUT), said that the Central government has already released the first installment of funds against state annual action plan (SAAP) 2015-16 and 2016-17 under AMRUT for all states.  Further, the Central government has also released the first installment of funds against SAAP III (2017-20).  He said that timely implementation of projects is crucial for the success of the mission and to avoid time and cost over runs.  He said under the mission, the state governments are required to furnish the Utilisation Certificates (UCs) for the amount released to them, within six months of the funds released. MCC approves Rs 33.25 cr under AMRUT scheme 17.1.2018 Deccan Herald - District
The Council of the Mangaluru City Corporation gave its approval for utilising Rs 33.25 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme for developing water supply systems in Mangaluru. Informing the special meeting of the council on Wednesday, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that a sum of Rs 185 crore has been sanctioned under AMRUT scheme of which, Rs 2 core will be utilised for developing parks, Rs 4 crore for the construction of stormwater drains and Rs 55 crore will be used for rectifying UGD works in Surathkal. In the second phase of ADB funded project, the government sanctioned Rs 218 crore for drinking water supply and Rs 195 crore for UGD works. To supply uninterrupted water to the city under Jalasiri project, an action plan for Rs 360 crore has been prepared.
