Tamil Nadu: Student drives car into well, dies 27.4.2017
Chennai: A 19-year-old college student who was attempting to drive his friend’s car died when the car fell into a farm well near Tiruttani on Tuesday. The victim, Shyam Senthil Kumar, got into his friend's car while his three friends were taking a bath in a small tank after switching on the water pump. Police said the youth did not know how to drive a car but tried his hand at the wheel while the others were busy. The car started rolling along bumpy farm fields and finally ended up in the well of another farm. Seeing this, the others alerted the villagers and they informed police and fire and rescue personnel. A team of fire personnel rushed to the village and they fished out the car with the body of Shyam inside it. Shyam had walked away with the car key from his friend saying he wanted to drink water from the car and then tried to drive it driving. Hotels down shutters in Kozhikode due to drought 27.4.2017
KOZHIKODE: Hostels, hotels and restaurants have started feeling the pinch of the water crisis in the district, resulting in the closure of a few of them. Twelve hotels in the city downed shutters last few weeks followed by six in Koyilandy and four in Thottilpalam. “We mainly depended on the water tankers coming from Iringapalli, but for last one week, it has stopped citing a shortage of water in that area,” said Ahmad Jamal, an eatery owner in the city. “Since water is not there, I had no other go. We have sought the corporation's help for water so that we can reopen them." The hotels and restaurants had been getting water from borewells in Kovoor, Parayancheri and Vengeri. But as the wells in those regions started drying up, the local people protested. “At present, we are buying water from Parambil Bazar paying Rs 3,000 for a 2,500-litre tanker. Earlier, we were paying half the rate,” Suresh Nandan, a member of Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association, said. “We cannot see more hotels and ...

Mosquitoes thrive amid BBMP's foggy vision 27.4.2017
The government may have received a telling off for the pathetic state of the frothing Bellandur lake by the National Green Tribunal and told to clean it up in a month, but it is doing little to stop sewage from entering other lakes in and around the city or even to deweed them . While the stench from these lakes is a put- off all through the year, come summer and the situation worsens as they become even bigger breeding grounds of mosquitoes than usual. For people sweating it out under the hot sun in the city, swatting mosquitoes is an additional irritant in localities close to lakes and other polluted water bodies. The garbage heaps and open storm water drains are doing nothing to help the situation as they too are a beacon for mosquitoes that swirl around them in menacing clouds . While the BBMP claims to be doing fogging regularly in all 198 wards of the city, this doesn’t seem to be helping to curb the population of these winged bearers of  diseases like malaria, chikungunya and dengue.Says Mr D.S. ...

Stinking Durgam Cheruvu Lake gets new bridge 27.4.2017
Hyderabad: The cable bridge over Durgam Cheruvu will run across a highly polluted, shrinking lake. While Rs 184 crore has been sanctioned for the bridge, very little has been done to improve the condition of the lake. The new sewerage treatment plant is dysfunctional and sewerage from surrounding colonies flows into the lake. Once, one of the largest lakes in the Cyberabad area, it is now filled with stagnating garbage and covered with water hyacinth. “The catchment area of the lake and the surrounding area has been totally encroached upon. One estimate reveals over 100 million litres of sewerage flows into the Durgam Cheruvu every day,” says Lubna Sarwath of Save Our Urban Lakes, a city-based lake protection organisation. Changing lake: Google image from the year 2016 shows massive construction and encroachments around the lake. She says aquatic life has almost disappeared. The water spread area has been shrinking over the years and the benefits of the 5 MLD sewage treatment plant of HMDA in the lake ...

After 50 years, Bellandur Lake to be cleared of weeds, debris 26.4.2017
Bengaluru: Bengaluru Development Authority's (BDA) Herculean drive to remove weeds from Bellandur Lake continued for the second day on Tuesday. The move follows direction by the Principal Bench of National Green Tribunal, Delhi and this is the first such clean up drive after 50 years. Currently two earth movers have been deployed for the purpose and boats are expected to join in later. The team is now only able remove weeds on the lake periphery as earth movers cannot go into deep waters. According to sources, it would take at least three days for the boats to arrive from the Delhi and after that deweeding is expected to be taken up in full swing. The clean-up drive would be tentatively a six-month long process. Rafi, the crane operator said, "It is difficult for the JCB to go into the water. They can go up to 15-20 metres into the lake and beyond that it is dangerous." He claimed there were a lot of mosquitoes in that area and the stench was unbearable. It is estimated that the lake is currently filled ...
