The making of the Kathiyavadi Caddi 25.8.2019 Panorama – The Navhind Times
TENSING RODRIGUES The Silahara inscriptions give a lot of insight into the process of conversion of the economic clout of the kathiyavadi ksatriya into political power. Kharepatan plates of Anantadev I (1995 CE) record the exemption from certain customs duties and other concessions granted by him to two merchants of Balipattan when their ships and …

Soul searching 25.8.2019 Panorama – The Navhind Times
Thubten Samphel The brilliance of new China’s leaders in pursuing their hard-nosed strategic objectives in Tibet was to weave a plausible narrative of ‘liberation’ around what was an outright invasion of the country. The other twist in the narrative was to force Lhasa to sign the 17-Point Agreement in 1951 in which Tibet promised to …

Sops fine, structural reforms needed more 25.8.2019
The government"s willingness to respond to the concerns expressed by various sectors of industry brings more than a sliver of hope to the economy that has been facing a serious downturn. The slew of measures announced by the finance minister may lead only to minute cuts in revenues and the Centre must be prepared to do even more to bring about the rise in consumption without which the economy seems doomed to a downward spiral into a low six per cent range or worse. Whether the measures are sufficient to bring the world"s fastest growing economy to levels that would benefit a nation of such size is moot. Seeing the fall in economic growth over the last two years, it is easy to conclude that all is not well and basic structural reforms may be necessary for India to grow and truly aim for the ambitious $5 trillion mark highlighted by the Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech. The stock markets may be derided as "satta", which is a form of gambling, but markets are about ...

BJP's persuasive, urban face 25.8.2019
Former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was only 66 when he died on Saturday after a long illness, played a formative rise in his party"s transformation from provincial politics to storming the national stage. The deceased top-order ruling party politician made cultural revanchism, appealing to large cross sections of the people — his Parliamentary interventions in Hindi appealed to the common man, his polished English made him a star in the eyes of educated, globalised Indians, even those who did not agree with his views. His star only grew over the last few years of his life, especially with his witty, savvy persona on Twitter. Jaitley was a sophisticated propagandist and politician who could sound persuasive even when holding a weak hand, for instance, when litterateurs and prominent cultural figures returned national awards to protest the Modi regime. He helped restore faith in a sliding economy, shoring up his side when it was under attack for a spate of mob-lynchings. Mr Jaitley was ...

At home in court, Parliament, and the social circuit 25.8.2019
For a politician, Arun Jaitley, who passed away seven minutes past noon on Saturday in New Delhi due to medical complications, was informal, even nonchalant, chatty and humorous, relaxed. Generally, politicians take themselves seriously and others also seriously. And he loved to chat. Not many politicians are comfortable doing it. It could be because Jaitley still relished the university canteen atmosphere. He was India"s metropolitan politician of his generation. It is for this reason that he was a misfit in Indian politics where provincial rootedness was the key to success. Politicians from Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad should be metropolitan but they are not because they shed their urbanity before taking to politics and win elections. That Jaitley did not win a popular election turns out to be a blessing in disguise. He did not have to shed his city mannerism, easy bonhomie to survive in the political arena. This could be seen when he would come back from the ...

NRC updation in Assam acts as deterrent to influx from Bangladesh 25.8.2019
Guwahati: The ongoing process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has sent a very strong message in neighbouring Bangladesh as security agencies in their assessment have found that the infiltration flow has come down significantly in the past couple of years. Informing that the process of updating the NRC was acting as very strong deterrent to infiltration, security sources said the friendly government in Bangladesh has also extended its pro-active cooperation in verifying the identity and taking back the people declared foreigners by the tribunal in India. Admitting that the growing index of economy in the frontier districts of Bangladesh adjoining Assam has also played a key role, security sources said that a majority of migration from Bangladesh was due to economic reasons. Pointing out that there have been attempts to spread various rumors, security sources told this newspaper that the state government was taking all the necessary steps but there was hardly any chance of unrest after ...
