HC confirms death for techie for 7-yr-old girl's rape, murder 10.7.2018 The Tribune
Chennai, July 10 The Madras High Court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence awarded to a 23-year-old techie by a lower court for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl here last year. A division Bench of Justices S Vimala and Ramathilagam upheld the February 19 order of the Mahila court in neighbouring Chengalpattu, awarding death penalty to S Dhasvanth, an engineering graduate. The Bench was dismissing an appeal filed by Dhasvanth, who had challenged the trial court order convicting him in the rape-and-murder case of the seven-year old girl, who was his neighbour, in February last year. The crime had triggered a public outcry and Dhasvanth had faced the ire of a group of women, who assaulted him when he was brought to the lower court for trial. According to the prosecution, the convict had lured the girl into his flat at Mugalivakkam, using a dog, and strangled her to death after raping her. The convict had then dumped the body in a travel bag and subsequently, burnt it on a highway. He was ...

Yet to take off, Jio institute given eminence tag by govt 10.7.2018 The Tribune
New Delhi, July 9 The HRD Ministry’s selection of the yet-to-be-established Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation as one of the six “Institutions of Eminence” drew sharp criticism from various quarters on Monday, with many questioning the process of selection and the motive behind it. The UGC, a panel of which carried out the selections, however, defended the move saying the institution was accorded the coveted tag under greenfield category for new or proposed institutions. “It doesn’t have a campus, a website or any alumni and it has left behind prominent IITs as well as private players like Ashoka University and OP Jindal Global University... Can’t we see the conflict of interest,” JNU professor Ayesha Kidwai said. “What is Jio Institute? I thought only I didn’t know its eminence, but looks like everyone knew of its existence only on Monday,” a Twitter user said. Who all got it Public sector: IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru  private sector: Manipal Academy of Higher ...

Huawei patent case shows Chinese courts' rising clout 12.6.2018 DNA: Top News
A smartphone patent fight between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and Samsung Electronics Co could reach a global resolution through a ruling by a Chinese court, a development that reflects the growing attractiveness of China as a quick and effective forum for intellectual property disputes. The size of the U.S. market and the strength of the country's independent judiciary have historically given its courts the final say in most big cross-border patent disputes. Legal experts say U.S. courts' pre-eminence in intellectual property matters has helped foster a culture of innovation that China wants to emulate. The case is being closely watched because it has set up a clash between the two judicial systems, with a U.S. judge instructing Huawei not to enforce a ruling it won against Samsung in China, said Erick Robinson, a Beijing lawyer who previously was Qualcomm Inc's Asia patent director. "This has never happened before, at least not on this scale," Robinson said in a recent interview. Huawei filed lawsuits ...

New Delhi, June 5 Aiming to focus the energies of universities on to achieving academic excellence, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday suggested the Governors to have greater interaction with Vice Chancellors (VCs) and think of developing a Centre for Excellence on a subject that would encourage students to pursue serious academic work. “Each state university can develop a “Centre for Excellence” in one subject. With this, students can get an institution of eminence to pursue studies in the subject of choice,” the President said in concluding remarks at the two-day Conference of Governors here. Urging the Governors to convene VCs’ meetings, he noted while many were already doing this, the agenda of such conferences could be decided in consultation with the VCs. DNA EXCLUSIVE: Mumbai has to maintain position as commercial engine, says Ajoy Mehta 24.5.2018 DNA: Top News
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) hopes the Development Plan 2034 & Development Control Rules will help Mumbai maintain its pre-eminence as a commercial engine. In an exclusive interview, city civic chief Ajoy Mehta clears ambiguities and misconceptions about the city's new Development Plan (DP). Will opening of No Development Zone (NDZ) come at the cost of the environment and benefit only builders? That is a misnomer -- NDZ was never a no-development zone. In the 1967 and 1991 DPs, Floor Space Index (FSI) of 0.5 was allowed on NDZ. Of the 13,000 hectares of NDZ in Greater Mumbai, 10,000 hectare is marked as Natural Area (NA). What is left is 3,000 hectare, of which 700 to 800 hectare has slums. Hence we are left with about 2,200 hectare, which we are taking up for development. If the NDZ land, which we call Social Development Zone (SDZ), has to be developed, the owner will have to divide and allot one-third for housing, one-third for open space and one-third for sale. We have marked a huge ...
