General News |
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said today that the government would meet the target of construction of 72 lakh household and public toilets in urban areas under the Swachh Bharat Mission a year ahead of the schedule of October 2, 2019, and stressed that behavioural change among people was at the heart of cleanliness mission which would ensure its success.
The Housing and Urban Affairs Minister said that the success of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would hugely depend on the success of India just as the success of China in taking people out of poverty led to the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The minister said the government has set a target of building 67 lakh household toilets and five lakh community or public toilets in urban areas by October 2019.
As on March 31, we have already built 52 lakh individual household toilets and 3.2 lakh public toilets...well one year in advance of October 2019, well before October 2018, we would build the required amount |

Tens of thousands protest as Armenia crisis deepens
|
25.4.2018 |
General News |
Armenia's crisis deepened today as tens of thousands of people took to the streets after the opposition accused the government of refusing to negotiate a transfer of power following the resignation of veteran leader Serzh Sarkisian.
Authorities beefed up security in the capital Yerevan, cordoning off buildings housing the government and the ruling Republican party, and deploying hundreds of police and several armoured personnel carriers.
Protesters shouted, clapped, whistled, beat drums and tooted car horns in demonstrations that underscored the political turmoil gripping the impoverished former Soviet republic.
Led by 42-year-old Nikol Pashinyan, thousands of demonstrators marched through Yerevan against the Republican Party's unwillingness to facilitate the transfer of power after former president Sarkisian stood down Monday from his new post of prime minister.
Pashinyan sported his trademark khaki-coloured T-shirt and clutched a megaphone as protesters chanted "Nikol for prime ... |

Govt takes action on rape, but sons must also be made responsible for safe environment: Modi
|
24.4.2018 |
General News |
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said sons have to be made more responsible for a safe environment for daughters and asserted that the promulgation of an ordinance on rape showed the Centre acted on people's outrage on sexual crimes against minors.
Days after the government approved the ordinance allowing courts to award the death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years, Modi also called for a social movement to ensure the safety of girls.
"Shivraj ji (Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan) just referred to the capital punishment provided in the ordinance for rape against minors and I could see that it (the remark) received cheers from everyone present here," Modi said while addressing a rally here.
"There is a government in Delhi which listens to your voice and takes decisions. So, the Centre has made a provision for capital punishment to the monstrous intent," he said.
The Union Cabinet had on April 21 okayed the ordinance amid a ... |

Pak terrorism must end for dialogue with India

General News |
The relationship between India and Pakistan will always remain wilted till there is a complete halt to cross-border terrorism, says a report published by a Europe-based think tank.According to the European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS) report, a key reason for the trust deficit that exists between New Delhi and Islamabad is "the sheer incompatibility between both nuclear powers."The EFSAS report clearly acknowledges that both countries have their problems, but Pakistan in particular possesses a nature that is in perpetual conflict with India's."The deep-rooted anti-India stand and inflexible hostility has been complemented by a continuous undermining of democratic institutions by the (Pakistan) Army, which makes it difficult to know, whom to talk to in Pakistan when one is embarking on a path of normalising relations," says the EFSAS report .It further says that the army's "preoccupations with a large-scale Pashtun social movement for fundamental human rights in ... |
