The compensation package for the farmers whose land will be acquired for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet train project will be "much more" than what is mandated by the Land Acquisition Act, a senior official said here today. A joint measurement survey is being conducted at present, which is the last stage of land acquisition process, said Achal Khare, managing director of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the implementing agency. After the survey is over, farmers will learn about the compensation package, he said. "I can assure that we will be compensating much more than what they are expecting," Khare said. He was here to speak on the project as part of the 2nd A N Khosla lecture series, organised by the Ahmedabad chapter of the IIT Roorkee Alumni Association at the IIT Gandhinagar. "We have decided the entitlement package philosophically, which is more than what is provided in the Land Acquisition Act. Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai today said he had started the process of denotifying the land acquired for the mega oil refinery at Nanar in Ratnagiri district, contrary to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's assertion last week that the minister had no authority to do so. The project has become a bone of contention between ruling allies BJP and Shiv Sena, with the latter opposing it tooth and nail. Speaking to reporters at his office in Mantralaya, Desai, a senior Sena leader, said he had directed the Industries Department secretary to submit a report about de-notification. Being the industries minister, he was empowered to denotify the land acquisition process, Desai said. "As per the official procedure, the industries secretary will seek report from the Ratnagiri district collector who oversees the acquisition process," he said. About 50 farmers were detained by police on Sunday as thousands of cultivators protested against a Gujarat government companys move to take possession of land at a village in Bhavnagar district for a proposed lignite plant. However, the local head of a farmers group said that the police manhandled the protesters, including women and children, and in the process at least five people were injured. The Gujarat Power Corporation Limited had acquired 3,377 acres of land from nearly 1,250 farmers across 12 villages under Ghogha taluka in Bhavnagar about two decades ago, to set up its proposed lignite plant.
