The Shaw thing: Eric Fisher is secret athlete factory's latest bright SPARQ 1.5.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
No 1 Draft pick owes a lot to the sandbox, the pole of pain and other innovations that have launched a fleet of NFL stars It's midday under a hot Florida sun, and the record-breaking Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson and the veteran Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor are dripping sweat in "the sandbox", in the slightly unlikely setting of the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The sandbox is a special workout, devised by the fitness coach Tom Shaw, which is set in a 50-yard by 10-yard area hacked out of the native scrubland and filled ankle-deep with thick, cloying sand. This is, in theory, the offseason for established NFL stars like Johnson and Taylor. They have no business being out in the full glare of a humid Floridian spring, the temperature pushing 90°F. Their workout partners are an odd collection, including a local high-school hopeful; Kerry Joseph, a quarterback for the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos; the University of ...

Warning from headteachers as parents dig deep to fund boom in private tutors 26.4.2013 The Guardian -- Front Page
• Guardian investigation reveals surge in private lessons but schools say agencies 'trade on insecurity' • Join in the conversation on the increase in private tutoring Parents on modest incomes and families from ethnic minorities are behind a massive boom in Britain's multimillion-pound tutoring market, a Guardian investigation can reveal. Hundreds of thousands of children – some as young as two – now receive private tuition at a cost of between £7 and £60 an hour. Parents say the extra study gives their children confidence and helps them secure top grades, but headteachers are warning that the tutoring market is beginning to spiral out of control and is "trading on insecurity". Interviews with seven tutoring agencies reveal that: • One already large tuition business has seen 42% growth over the past year. • One agency is recruiting 100 new tutors a month to cope with demand. • One has opened more than 50 extra study centres over the past year. Parents, such as Batool, from ...

Justin Bieber shows prompt Norwegian schools to reschedule exams 4.4.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
Several schools have changed dates after fears that Bieber's forthcoming Oslo performances clash with exam timetables Several Norwegian schools have rescheduled this month's mid-term examinations to avoid a conflict with Justin Bieber's arrival in Oslo. Five schools in the fishing port of Ålesund decided to adjust their timetable to accommodate local Beliebers who planned to attend the singer's gigs. "We find it regrettable, but we preferred to move forward the Norwegian exams to avoid problems," Roar Aasen, headmaster at Blindheim secondary school, told AFP. Like the other schools in Ålesund, Blindheim feared that dozens of their students would skip their exams to make the seven-hour trek to Oslo, where Bieber will perform on 16 and 17 April. About half of the girls at Aasen's school planned to attend Bieber's shows, according to NRK. "We considered that this was a battle that we could not win," Aasen said. He and other headmasters decided to change the schedule "three or four months ...

New curriculum teaches 'more cookery and horticulture than technology' 31.3.2013 The Guardian -- Front Page
BAE Systems chairman Dick Olver criticises inadequacy of DfE proposals, while unions deride uncreative 'pub-quiz primer' The chairman of one of the UK's biggest companies has attacked a key plank of the new national curriculum for teaching children more about horticulture and cookery than technology. Dick Olver, whose firm BAE Systems has shown strong support for the government's education reforms by being a partner in a new technical school, warned that "something had gone very wrong" in drafting the design and technology curriculum. The Department for Education (DfE) has published draft curriculums for 10 secondary school subjects. Teachers have until the middle of next month to suggest changes. They will be expected to teach the new curriculums from September 2014. Olver, who is also chair of E4E, an organisation of 36 engineering institutions, said the draft proposals for design and technology did "not meet the needs of a technologically literate society". "Instead of ...

Reality check: Being a doctor doesn't guarantee 'big bucks' anymore | Matthew Moeller 26.3.2013 The Guardian -- World Latest
I love my job as a doctor, but it came at a hefty price with many years of training, long hours and large student debt I am writing this letter because I feel that our leaders and lawmakers do not have an accurate picture of what it actually entails to become a physician today; specifically, the financial, intellectual, social, mental, and physical demands of the profession. This is an opinion that is shared amongst many of my colleagues. Because of these concerns, I would like to personally relate my own story. My story discusses what it took to mold, educate, and train a young Midwestern boy from modest roots to become an outstanding physician, who is capable of taking care of any medical issues that may plague your own family, friends, or colleagues. I grew up in the suburbs of southeast Michigan in a middle class family. My father is an engineer at General Motors and my mother is a Catholic school administrator in my hometown. My family worked hard and sacrificed much to enroll me in a ...
