UGC calls vice chancellors' meet on Guru Purnima 24.4.2018 General News
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has convened a national meet of all university vice chancellors on the occasion of Guru Purnima on July 27. The meeting will be chaired by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar. Besides vice chancellors of various universities across the country, the meeting will also be attended by renowned educationists, heads of statutory professional councils and directors of inter-university centres of the UGC. "The main agenda of the meeting will be digital initiatives in higher education and necessary measures for increasing research productivity of universities," a senior UGC official said. Jamia's minority status: HC recalls its earlier order 24.4.2018 General News
The Delhi High Court today recalled its order taking on record an affidavit of the NDA government saying Jamia Millia Islamia was not a minority institution, and striking off the response of the erstwhile UPA government supporting its minority status. The high court recalled its March 13 order saying it had "erronously" not noted that there were other parties in the matter who could have been affected by the proceedings. It allowed the plea of the university Vice Chancellor, its Registrar and the teachers' association that the present government has not established any ground for replacement of the existing affidavit of August 29, 2011. SunSource Energy to install 2.5 MW solar plant at Jamia Millia University 24.4.2018 General News
Solar project developer SunSource Energy today said it will set up a 2.5 MW solar rooftop at Jamia Millia Islamia University, which would help the institution save around Rs 1 crore in energy cost every year. SunSource Energy is all set to have the rooftop solar facility on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia University by the end of June 2018, SunSource said in statement. Jamia Millia recently signed an MoU with SunSource Energy Pvt. Ltd. to execute the project on a turnkey basis for the next quarter of a century under the Renewable Energy Service Company model (RESCO). The electricity would be supplied at Rs 3.39 per unit for a period of 25 years. The MoU is in line with the government's target of installation of 40 GWp grid-connected solar rooftops by 2022. The installation of solar panels on over 50 rooftops of various buildings like central library, colleges, and department of Jamia and the hostels has already commenced. UGC releases list of 24 'self-styled', fake varsities in country 24.4.2018 General News
The University Grants Commission has released a list of 24 "self-styled" and fake varsities across the country including eight in the national Capital. "Students and public at large are informed that at present following 24 self-styled and unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act in various parts of the country," a notice issued by the UGC read. "These universities have been declared as fake and are not entitled to confer any degrees," it added. The fake universities which have been found functioning in Delhi include Commercial University, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR-Centric Juridical University, Indian Institution of Science and Engineering, Viswakarma Open University for Self-employment, Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya and Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya. Delhi HC recalls order against minority status to Jamia Milia 24.4.2018 General News
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday recalled order opposing minority status to Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university.Last month, opposing the religious minority status awarded to JMI, the Centre had filed an affidavit in the Delhi High Court. India Tourism Development Corporation today said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jamia Millia Islamia to jointly offer a three-year Bachelors of Vocation in food production through the Ashok Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Varsity teachers call protest movement against draft bill 16.4.2018 General News
The associations of university teachers today said they will launch a protest movement against some clauses of the draft bill for colleges and universities prepared by the West Bengal government. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) and the All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA) announced separate agitation programmes against the draft bill for its alleged anti-teacher clauses. A JUTA spokesman said they will hold a two-hour sit-in at the university on April 26. ABUTA leader Goutam Maiity said, some of the clauses of the draft bill were tantamount to snatching of democratic rights. Citing a clause like taking the consent of the authorities before commenting on the work of the state government, he claimed such steps will kill the liberal and academic atmosphere of the institutions. Classes begin in Pakistan's first school for transgenders 16.4.2018 General News
Pakistan's first of its kind school for transgenders opened here today to provide education and vocational skills to people from the community. The Gender Guardian school has been opened by NGO Exploring Future Foundation (EFF) in the Defence Housing Authority area of the city. The NGO said Lahore -- Pakistan's second-most populous city -- has a population of about 30,000 transgender persons. Classes today commenced in the school, which offers a full 12 years of academic education from the primary level to matriculation and then leading up to college, its officials said. The school also has training-based courses in eight fields, including cooking, fashion designing and cosmetics, on offer. "This school has been set up to educate the neglected and oppressed section of the society.
