Doordarshan mulls making prog to empower people LWE-hit areas 16.5.2018 General News
Public service broadcaster Doordarshan is looking into the possibility of collaborating with various stakeholders to make programmes to empower people living in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), a senior official said today. "Social sector organisations, the UNICEF, community radio, the United Nations and its supported agencies, various ministries and even district collectors have created contents on LWE areas and why not collaborate to empower people. Such collaboration would have greater impact," Doordarshan Director-General Supriya Sahu said. The DG was speaking at the release of UNICEF's Communication for Development Report 2013-17. "Aging" Kerala mulls panel for senior citizens 10.4.2018 General News
: Kerala, which has around 42 lakh senior citizens, may soon have an exclusive commission to deal with the issues of elderly people on the model of women, youth and child rights' panels. The LDF government is actively considering the plan to set up the panel along with implementing several other initiatives for senior citizens in view of increasing complaints ofatrocities and harassment against them. Interestingly, Kerala was one of the earliest states to have introduced an 'Old Age Policy' in 2006 for senior citizens to ensure maximum welfare measures for them. DRI seizes elephant tusk worth over Rs 1 crore 19.2.2018 General News
An elephant tusk worth over Rs 1 crore has been seized by DRI officials from Siliguri, according to an official statement issued today. Based on specific intelligence input that an elephant tusk would be carried from Assam to Siliguri on a private bus for smuggling to Nepal, officers of DRI intercepted the vehicle in the Mallaguri area in the early hours of Thursday. A rucksack was found under the driver's seat when the bus was searched. "The rucksack was packed with old and used clothes on the top and underneath the clothes, three pieces of an elephant tusk were kept concealed in packed condition," it said. The tusk, weighing 12.4 kg, has a total length of 0.86 metre and a girth of 0.36 metre. It had been cut into three pieces for ease of packaging and transportation, the statement read. The US today urged Pakistan to restore operations of Radio Mashaal shut down by Islamabad for allegedly broadcasting programmes against the "interests" of the country. The Pashto-language radio station of US Congress-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) was operating from the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Last week Pakistan had shut down Islamabad bureau of Radio Mashaal after the ISI alleged that its programmes were "against the interest of Pakistan and in line with a hostile intelligence agency's agenda". The allegations were denied by REF/RL. "Radio Mashaal serves no intelligence agency or government," RFE/RL president Thomas Kent had said.
