A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the vacation bench of the Gujarat High Court on Monday challenged the move by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to allow 65 councillors and 8 MLAs the use of various community halls, party plots and such without due process and in violation of the rules. It is alleged that the standing committee of the AMC through a one-line resolution allowed this to happen even though this was in violation of the normal process of booking of municipal premises. It has further alleged that the municipal premises so booked in the name of councillors for a particular function was, in fact, being used by someone else. The petition by one Khemchand Rajaram Koshti, a lawyer also alleged that the resolution ensured that all such municipal premises were booked for the year 2018 as well as 2019. Activist arrested ahead of Amit Shah's visit 20.5.2018 General News
Ahead of BJP national president Amit Shah's visit to the state today, an RTI activist and leader of a farmers' body, Akhil Gogoi, along with his supporters was taken into custody here for protesting against Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, a police officer said. Shah is scheduled to attend the third conclave of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in the state capital later in the day. Several Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) members, headed by Gogoi, gathered in different parts of city this morning to wave black flags at the BJP leader as a mark of protest over the proposed Bill, the officer said. The bill, among other things, proposes to reduce the aggregate period of residential qualification for the process of citizenship by naturalisation of the concerned persons from 11 years to six years. A 25-year-old man was today arrested for trying to extort money from former Gujarat minister Jayanti Kavadia by posing as an associate of gangster Ravi Pujari, police said. Ashishkumar Sharma, who told police that he was an assistant director in the film industry, was arrested from Mumbai in a joint effort by the Morbi police, the Ahmedabad police's Crime Branch and Mumbai police's Anti-Extortion Cell, said a senior official. "On May 16, former minister Kavadia got a call from Sharma, who after identifying himself as gangster Ravi Pujari's henchman, demanded Rs 5 lakh from him," said Akshayraj Makwana, Superintendent of Police, Morbi. Fadnavis approves filling up of 36,000 vacant posts 16.5.2018 General News
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave his approval today to fill 36,000 vacant posts in different departments of the state government, especially in agriculture and rural development departments. During the budget session of the state legislature held earlier this year, Fadnavis had announced that total 72,000 vacant posts will be filled in two phases over the next two years. As part of that, 36,000 vacancies will be filled in the first phase, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said. The move is aimed at strengthening the government machinery in rural areas, it said. Four cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland Khaplang (NSCN-K) were arrested from Meghalayas West Jaintia Hills district, police said today. Forty-year-old Gaising Maringmei, a self-styled 'revenue' secretary of the NSCN-K was picked up on Sunday evening from Khliehtyrshi village in the district and later arrested, Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told PTI. Gaising's arrest led to the arrest of two other members of the militant group from their hideout in the village, the Syiem said.
