Road will imperil Corbett tiger population, Centre tells National Green Tribunal 21.8.2018 DNA: Opinion
The Uttarakhand government's proposed Kandi road project would jeopardise big cat population in Jim Corbett reserve, the Centre and India's apex tiger and wildlife protection bodies have told the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The reserve has one of the few viable tiger populations in the country, the Union Environment Ministry, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) have said in an affidavit. The joint affidavit, filed by NTCA on behalf of all three parties, comes as a blow to Trivendra Singh Rawat's government that has aggressively pushed the project. The proposed project, connecting Ramnagar and Kotdwar, will pass through the core area of the reserve to cut the distance between Garhwal and Kumaon by 80 km. NGT had sought their response on a plea by advocate Gaurav Bansal who has challenged the project, raising concerns of damage to the reserve. The affidavit says that the critical habitat, notified in 2010, is one of the most important source areas ...

Is feasibility study for Kandi Road not contempt of court: NTCA to Wildlife Institute of India 13.8.2018 DNA: Money
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) sought a clarification from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), another environment ministry body, on how it is carrying out a feasibility study for the Kandi Road proposed through Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve despite the Supreme Court prohibiting that alignment in 2005. The NTCA pointed out that since both the SC and Uttarakhand High Court had passed orders against the current alignment, it might be a contempt of their orders. The WII, an autonomous body under the Environment Ministry, signed an MoU with National Buildings Construction Corporation to prepare a feasibility report on the Kandi Road project. The alignment that passes through Corbett Tiger Reserve would cut down the distance between Garhwal and Kumaon by 80 km. Currently, the project is also facing litigation in the National Green Tribunal and it had issued a show-cause notice to Uttarakhand government over its approval for the road. The NTCA has also pointed out that as per the Wildlife ...

This 1971 war hero from Nagaur is disabled in body, not in spirit 7.7.2018 DNA: Opinion
The Indo-Pak war of 1971 was a decisive war between the two neighbouring countries. If on the eastern front India’s victory resulted in creation of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), on the Western front India captured a vast area of Pakistan. The indomitable spirit and impeccable discipline of the soldiers who anchored the victory is now a celebrated part of our folklore.  One of those soldiers was Captain Bhagwan Singh Jodha of the 4 KUMAON Regiment who was awarded the Sena Medal for his gallantry in the war. A native of Didwana tehsil in Nagaur district in Rajasthan, Captain Jodha not only took part in the war but even successfully carried out the operation of capturing a living image of dignity and pride.  There is a visible twinkle in his eyes when he is asked to narrate his story. It is close to half a century, but the story is so fresh in his mind as if it happened yesterday. Captain Jodha, during 1971 war, lost his leg as a consequence of enemy fire, while leading an operation to capture Shamsher ...
