Power bills set to rise in Punjab, regulator clears about 2% hike in tariff 19.4.2018 General News
Electricity bills of consumers in Punjab are expected to inflate with the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission today announcing an average power tariff hike of about 2 per cent across all categories for 2018-19. The Commission also decided to marginally increase fixed charges along with an increase of about 2 per cent over the existing energy charges. In the new tariff order released today, the commission assessed the Aggregate Revenue Requirement (ARR) of power utility PSPCL at Rs 32,486.63 crore for 2018-19. The consolidated deficit was pegged at Rs 668.91 crore, an official release said. To cover this gap, the existing tariff needs to be increased by 2.17 per cent, the release said. However, some relief in the fixed charges has been given to ARC Furnaces/PIU industrial category consumers and also rationalization in tariff of NRS consumers having load up to 20kW, has been done in view of the regulatory requirements to keep cross subsidy levels as per policy guidelines. Two cubs found dead, case registered 19.4.2018 General News
A case was registered against unidentified persons in connection with the death of two cubs in Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan's Sawaimadhopur district, an official said today. The case was registered with the forest department at Ranthambhore under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 yesterday against unknown offenders, additional principal chief conservator of forests and chief wildlife warden GV Reddy said. He said the cubs could have been killed by locals after there were reports of man-animal conflicts in the area. However, nothing conclusive can be said at the moment unless the postmortem and forensic reports come, he said. Two cubs of tigress T-79, both aged around 13 months, were found dead in Anwad ki Khard area in Ranthambhore on Tuesday evening. I-T Dept Bengal Circle collection up 14 pc to 41K cr in FY18 19.4.2018 General News
Direct tax collections of the I-T Department's Bengal Circle rose almost 14 per cent to Rs 41,000 crore in 2017-18 compared to the previous year, a senior official said today. In 2016-17, the direct tax collection from the region was around Rs 36,000 crore, Income Tax Chief Commissioner (Bengal circle and Sikkim) Seema Khorana Patra said at a discussion in Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Net national direct tax collections touched Rs 1,003 lakh crore in 2017-18, a growth of 18 per cent over the previous fiscal. There was also a rise of 26 per cent in filing of Income Tax Returns. The I-T official discussed the new provisions of the I-T Act for 2018-19 and 2019-20 assessment years. A flat Rs 40,000 standard deduction has been introduced in lieu of Rs 19,200 transport allowance and Rs 15,000 for medical reimbursement for individual taxpayers.

Corporator "custodial" death case: NCP demands judicial probe 19.4.2018 General News
The NCP today demanded a judicial probe into what it claimed the "custodial death" of a party corporator from Ahmednagar earlier this week. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik alleged that the corporator, Kailas Giravale (55), was beaten up in the custody by Ahmedngar police officials during April 11 to April 15. Giravale, arrested for allegedly vandalising the office of Ahmednagar SP, died due to a heart attack at Pune's Sassoon Hospital while he was under judicial custody, on April 16. "Giravale was beaten by a local crime branch inspector, a Ahmednagar police inspector, a police inspector, and a constable when he was in police custody from April 11 to 15," Malik said while addressing a press conference here. Maha govt's open defecation-free claim baseless: NCP 19.4.2018 General News
The NCP today dismissed as "baseless" the Maharashtra government's claim that the rural areas of the state have become open defecation free. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had yesterday declared rural areas of the state open defecation-free (ODF) and claimed the state has constructed the highest number of toilets in the country. "The chief minister's claim that the state has become open defecation free is baseless.
